I posted this on SEGAbits a while back. I've looked high and low for a Game Genie region bypass code for the Sega Classic release of Golden Axe, but it is nowhere to be found. Help? HARDWARE: Sega Classic release of Golden Axe, plus original Japanese Mega Drive from 1988 and the original Genesis Game Genie. I will also get technical and note that my Sega Classic Golden Axe has the ROM labeled "SEGA MPR-14930-S 9317 D". You can tell in-game that it's the Sega Classic version when the SEGA Logo Screen shows the logo's outline entirely drawn from left to right instead of lines being drawn from the upper-left corner of the logo down to the bottom-right corner, and instances of the SEGA Logo feature a trademark symbol instead of a registered trademark symbol. I'm pretty sure this is suited to the Hacking sub-forum because it should deal with digging into the game's code... right?
Why not just install the region switches? You have a model 1 mega drive so it's just six wires and two SPDT On/On switches, three wires and one switch if you don't plan on playing PAL games. You'll find four jumpers lined up and down near the Sega CD connector. They are labeled JP1-4. JP1 and JP4 should have a trace between the two points. That means it's in Japanese 60Hz mode. JP2 is English mode and JP3 is 50Hz mode. Cut the traces (or just the trace of JP1 if you don't want PAL) between the jumpers and solder 3 wires: one on the left side of JP1, one on the right side, and one on the right side of JP2. Then solder the left side (ground) to the middle of the switch and the other wires on both sides. Mount the switch somewhere on the case. Do the same for JP3 and JP4 (again, only for PAL games). The regions are as follows: Japanese 60Hz (Japan; JP1 and JP4) English 60Hz (North America; JP2 and JP4) Japanese 50Hz (PAL Asia; JP1 and JP3) English 50Hz (Europe; JP2 and JP3) There is also a switchless version that cycles regions using the reset button, however, they tend to leave out the rarely used PAL Asia region. One more thing about the mods: you won't get color in 50Hz mode unless you use an RGB SCART or RGB JP21 cable (why wouldn't you use RGB?). There is also another mod that allows color in 50Hz mode on composite video.
GAME GENIE. I am trying to get my game to run on a non-U.S. console, and I do not have the time, patience, or money (yet) to install language/refresh rate switches in my console.
That mod will allow the game to run on a Japanese system. The game will run if you put the system into English mode, effectively turning the MD into an American Sega Genesis. The only difference between a Japanese Mega Drive and an American Genesis is the language jumper, the outer shell, and the RF modulator (absent on JPN MD). Also you can get the parts for under $5 if you know how to solder. If not, someone on here can do it for you for a small fee. The region is controlled by the game. It detects what the language and refresh rate of the system is and plays the version of the game for that region or gives an error message if it's an incorrect region. If you want to go the game genie route, I'm sure someone on here can give you the code.
My apologies, I wasn't aware if you knew how they worked or not. I tried searching for the codes but got nothing. If they don't exist, it may be possible to create one but I wouldn't even begin to know how to do that.
Well, somebody's gotta find the code. Doesn't help that it hasn't been dumped yet (though The Cutting Room Floor's entry on Golden Axe for the Genesis somehow has a screencap from emulation). Entry in question: https://tcrf.net/Golden_Axe_(Genesis)
First off. Don't double post and learn how to properly use a forum. Secondly, Joey has tried to help you using the easiest method possible for bypassing the region on the Genesis. If there isn't a code out there maybe you should put out the effort and try to make one. We do not have all of the answers for you, and Joey gave probably the best answer I could think of. The region switch is what you need to do. Relying on the GG for your region issues is completely unreliable. Gather the very small funds it takes to do the mod, and learn up how to do it. We aren't the gaming babysitters dude.
@Vic Golf Chad Have you tried the Universal codes from the "master list" (http://forum.digitpress.com/forum/s...Sega-Genesis-Region-Bypass-Game-Genie-Codes)? Have you tried the codes for Golden Axe III? Have you tried contacting the author for advice? I know the thread is five years old but still...
True. Don't beat up on others for giving you a solution. Maybe if you could actually put some effort into your posts, you could have specified you did not want to do that method in the first post?
Game genie is completely shitefor region codes, works with some older games but its crap.you need a PAR cause it has longer hex strings to tackle addresses out of the GameGenies capabilities. And the region swith is the end all be all. Thanks.
You guys are the absolute pits of the world. Who are you to tell me what to do and what not to do? Besides, I did not double-post, and I did not beat up on others. And I'll tell you something: I'll just sleep good tonight despite a loose wisdom tooth and know that this will gain the attention of The Cutting Room Floor.
Those guys are missing the underlying issue that led to this topic's creation: lack of interest in the game's Sega Classics edition It has been obtainable for years by anyone capable of making a rom and distributing it to the public, at insignificant cost (right now places like ebay have them for under $30).
The original isn't region locked so it just doesn't exist. No one put effort into finding it, if you know how to find the address that controls the region lock you MIGHT be able to convert it from hex to game genie format, but it's just too much effort for this Just for an alternate Sega intro. And you are in the MODDING and Hacking section and a lot of us are hardware modders, we weren't trying to be dicks. Region switches really are easier, and if you don't use a mega cd on your console you can tuck the switches in the expansion port. Seemless. Also this reminds me, I have a game genie I can give away....
Ask on gamehacking.org, I along with others on that forum hack these type of codes all the time and GG can do region bypass codes easily.
To be fair, if obvious, the Game Genie isn't intended to work on an original Japanese Mega Drive either. It too lacks the notched side to support the cartridge lock feature. Maybe we should be nice and help get a rom of this game made. Much more tools to poke around the game's code to solve your request.
You're getting off to a pretty poor start here, aren't you? Firstly, you DID double post - I just merged two posts you made in this thread within about 30 minutes of each other. That's double posting, my friend. Secondly, that attitude isn't going to get you any help around here. Ask nicely, explain yourself nicely. Don't attack other members. Read the forum rules, please. Oh yeah... clove oil on the tooth
