I just checked ncsx today and found out that gradius V is a cd game. Does this mean were going to have to suffer with slow loading?

  2. Not nessicarily, the game will load at the same speed regardless of if it's DVD or CD - it all depends on the PS2's drive speed and how well the developers integrated the loading routines. Games like Stretch Panic and Way Of The Samurai (two I have in my collection off the top of my head) are blueback CDs and they don't have terribly long load times...

By the by, are you importing Gradius V? If so, tell me how it is. :prayer: I wanted to spring for the import, but apparently we're getting it here September 14th or so, a date I suppose I can wait for.

I'm quite pleased by this as it means Teasure have made a tight little game.Remember that Ikaruga is only 16MB!!!!!A shooter does not need tons of space,Ikaruga,Radiant silvergun, sin and punishment, and Border down all show this.

R-Type Final is CD I believe and that has minimal loading times.

Its just that you'll be getting lots of DREs since its CD ;).

  6. Is the US R-Type Final on CD? I've got the Japanese import, and it's on a DVD. I've noticed a few other things like that tho - Dance Dance Revolution 6th Mix (DDR Max) is CD based in Japan, but the US release is DVD based, which I found odd.

Yeah, I'm really frothing at the mouth for Gradius V. It's sortof like Treasure's homecoming - they're back where it all began. The main reason I am holding out on importing is cash right now - the $60 I'd spend on it could come in handy elsewhere. Plus not currently having a PS2 and not being able to find my roommate's scary Thai modded one, I don't have much to play it on. :smt043 But if you want an import solution that doesn't involve halving your console's lifespan, I'd definately go with that fliptop - I had one for nearly a year before my PS2 died (a problem it had long before I installed the fliptop) and it worked wonderfully. The only crap thing is that you have to void your warranty, so make sure you won't be needing any repairs anytime soon.

Wonder if you can use HD loader on it.

  8. I would imagine so. Mine came with the Swap Magic discs - one for CD-based PS2 games and one for DVD based games. I burnt a copy of that PS2 MAME emulator to CD and it worked just fine, so I don't see why the HD loader wouldn't boot.

    Nice thing

The nice thing abut the PS2 is that it craps out just after the warranty.

    Re: Nice thing

I must disagree with oyu there. I bought my PS2 second hand a little over a year ago....Its box advertises Some of the PS2 launch titles so it isn't that new a model (I think) and I've had very few issues with it booting yet.

I have also been using the Swap disc method for most of the year I have owned it and have had no issues with my drive yet. Maybe I'm lucky ^_^

    Lucky you

Lucky you. I know very few people who have had one for over a year with no trouble. I wish mine didn't need to be mucked about with every few months to get it to work again. I played mine ALOT for the first year but I wasn't rough on it other that and about a month after the warranty is up it starts giving my DRE's all of the sudden. One thing is for sure, as soon as my brother get's his own console it will feel the might of the sledge hammer.

i had problems with my ps2 , it was the first model.
i bought it a month after is release 522 cnadian bucks.

and i had alot of problems with it , sometimes somes disc would not load in it , llike my gt3 , sometime it worked others times not.
he broke for the first time , no disc would play on it , only psx games (?!) and somes dvd movies ( only x-men and the patriot worked of my dvd library ( about 32 dvd)) strange isn't it?
i send it to sony. ( 6 month after i bought it)

    180$ of repair (canadian bucks)
    :Hangman:

it worked fine , like new , only the smell of new hardware was missing. :smt043

one year later he died a second time... :snipe:
i nver send it to sony , ill buy an other one in a month. i was waiting to a price drop and some modifications on the mother board.
my friend bought the 3rd version .
no prolbelems with it since a year or two. (could be more)

its not that i dislike the ps2 , no , really i love it. but that's really sad
that they haven't perfectioned their products before releashing them.

oh, and for gradius , i don't think it will have worst loading time tht if it was on dvd . if i'm not wrong , ps2 are faster with cd than dvd.
just pray that gradius will not make loud sound like other ps2 titles that i know ( ex: midnight club :Hangman: )

Got my PS2 2 years ago, modded it, and it runs flawlessly without problems after 2 years.

One curious thing is that XBOX has more problems than PS2, proporcionally.

When you compare the PS2 (+40 million sold), against the XBOX(+10 million sold), you will have more XBOX with problems than PS2.

I went to Maximum Games today (it's a game store that offer repair services, plus modchip installing) , to check their price to replace my modchip (gonna get a MATRIX INFINITY). They had 4 dead there PS2, plus 16 XBOX with different problems (DVD drive, HD,...).

Let's not forget that the XBOX tends to lock out on several games.

So don't just bash Sony quality. Microsoft is the same damn thing :smt023

The back of the CD/DVD PS2 case will say if its HDD compatible. Even if it says that, it won't say if it will copy the game onto the HDD to minimize loading times or save the game on the HDD.

I have an original scph 10000 which has never once gav me problems and I have modded it with the swap dosc mod and the laser on it is in tip top shape as well. The later revisions of the ps2 which I have modded have really cheap dvd drives so I can see why they konk out reasonable quickly but the first models are built to last.I have dropped mines from the kitchen bunker, and everything and it still works like the day I bought it,even for games burnt to cd or dvd.

Actually Assembler it won't work with hd loader, since the flip top requires you to use the swap disc, once that's loaded it disables the security check for one game, however with hdloader it would not work as the hdloader would probably trigger a security check. Hdloader works with modchips as it already has the security check disabled. I'm not woried about dre since i've had my ps2 for 2 years with out any problems.

In my case its the Gamecube. My original 'cube gets disc read errors on occasion (1st release, day one purchase. Played way too much :) ). My second 'cube I got for free and won't read discs at all....its under a year old too.

My gamebit tool arrives later this week....going to open the broken one up and see if adjusting the potentiometer for the lens will help it read discs again.

One curious thing about the GameCube, is that the controllers and the system itself tend to crack. When i sold mine (needed the money), my controller was a bit cracked on the back.

All my friends that have the system have the same problems, plus some cracks starting to show up on the top sides of the system.

It's weird. Anyone have these problems?

  20. Never really had the cracking problem on my 'cube, but it does do that miserable disc read error thing Deathcoaster mentioned - it's in fact the reason I got the thing free. And good luck with the potentiometer adjustment when you get your gamebit - either I jsut don't have the touch, or my system is beyond saving, but I can't seem to get the DREs to go away.... :Hangman:

A bit of a note that I thought was odd: While the system poops out within 5 minutes of Metroid Prime and 15 of Skies of Arcadia Legends, I could play Animal Crossing for hours at a time and never once have a problem. Of course, the drive was making noises the whole time like it was trying to devour its innards, but the game worked fine... :smt017
