Heh. Reminds of GT2000. Which was just GT2 but with PS2 graphics. Thats what this game was all about, not a true sequel, just an updated version of PS3. I rather wait for a true sequel.
I agree that it wasn't neccesarily a true sequel, but I'm a big GT fan and will take what I can get. While I don't recall all of the semantics, I seem to remember waiting an awful long time for GT4 to come out. Way longer than what was originally anticpated. Something in my gut tells me GT5 will be a no show until at least '08... if we're lucky. Kind of takes the wind out of the PS3's sails to me. Almost like MS saying "well, we're canning GOW (prior to its release), just wait until Halo 3 comes out".
I'd have to disagree with your comparison there, as Gears of War is a completly seperate (and much better) game. It would be more like them canning the Halo 2 extra content in favor of working on Halo 3.
This is a good thing. It is possible that they received enough negative feedback regarding the microtransactions (all cars and tracks had to be purchased separately) that they decided to scrap it.
Noted. I was trying to make a comparison based on selling points for the systems, not neccesarily game based content. GOW was one of the killer apps that MS touted when releasing the 360 while Halo 3 was nowhere to be seen. It piqued alot of peoples interest and I would say was major selling point for the 360 way before it was even released. GT HD was the same way for the PS3. I don't remember any other demos shown over the summer that were nearly as impressive (my opinion of course; MGS and Killzone are of no interest to me). Point taken, but if it is easy enough to release a free concept, I wish they would have just "finished" the concept sans microtransactions. Or at least make the free concept available world wide.
screw halo 3, Gow Seems much more fun. I ve never played GoW, but I have played Halo and I dare say it's nothing special to me. (I can feel your anger ) In addition, GoW was the kind of game that made MS include double the memory in the 360 (512 instead of 256, last moment) from what I ve heard. GT HD wasn't exactly GT5.
Epic showed MS what GoW would look like with just 256MB vs. 512MB. The end result was MS telling Epic "You just cost us a billion dollars." and Epic replying with somthing like "You just got a billion more sales." (or something like that). In a way, ironically, GoW is responsible for the initial shortages due to bad batches of memory in the Xbox 360 production lines. The PS3 seems to be nothing more than a bunch of afterthoughts built around a BluRay player. At least the Xbox 360 still at least resembles a gaming console, and that's considering MS's background. If the whole microtransaction thing was the downfall of GT HD, it's irony considering what the latest "update" brought for the PS3 (more(?) Account Management functions so people could spend, spend, spend). More afterthought rather than fixing current fixable issues at hand. If Sony can't get it's act together and at least fix some of the issues soon, they've just proven to me that they don't care about anything but using the PS3 to fix their broken company (from the cost of the system and software/accessories sales), and therefore will not be seeing my money at all. What happened to the focus Sony had during the first PlayStation?
Surely this is a good thing? It sounds like GTHD is being released as a free download and we'll see GT5, which looks fantastic, all the quicker. GTHD pics: http://www.the-magicbox.com/0611/game061125a.shtml
Ten cars and two tracks. Isn't that how it was planned to ship anyways? I wouldn't be surprised at all if Sony doesn’t offer up a few more cars and a track or two for a small fee a couple of weeks after this demo hits. This feels like they simply decided to use this game as a test run designed to see if people really are willing to pay micro transaction fees after all the heat they took over it. If I'm right the only thing different is that they just decided not to charge for the initial disc.
Well, If I am to take anything from the words "cancelled" and "project scrapped" then I would say no, the thing thats different is they decided not to finish the game.
Legal issues with car manufacturers in other territories (And payable rights of copyright) make it not-worthit , being a free download and all, for residents outisde of Japan. They'd have to go to great lenghts to ensure trademark and copyright matters are settled, and that can't be beneficial when something is absolutely free.
I wonder if that was the reason it was canned. Wouldn't they have to rebuy the liscense for each car they want to microtransaction again, since it is a new version of GT?
No worries for me... Tons of GT to play yet (Not to mention Tourist Trophy, Forza,... ) GTHD was always going to be just a GT4HD. So, maybe a PS3 in 2008 or 2009 seems perfect now. And i seriously doubt that Kazunori-san and the Polyphony Digital team will have GT5 ready for 2007.
It would seem that they already had gone through costs for the Japanese version, so they would probably classify it under "advertisment, promotion and marketing costs" in their books. To my understanding, there's not a great number of cars is there? (downloadable or otherwise)
Looks like it will be available in the US next week: http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/new...hp?story=12212 -hl718
