Wanted to post some info on this copy of Gun Runner I have from late '08. Gun Runner was an unfinished & unreleased game from Midway just before it closed down at the end of '08. The game was built on the Stranglehold engine which was a modified version of Unreal Engine 3. The game was a 3rd person shooter featuring cover gameplay and destructible environments and a variety of guns to choose from. There were on-foot shooting action sequences and there were also car chasing sequences. A friend could join you for co-op play. If playing alone, the other player's character was controlled by the CPU. If a player went down in battle it is up to their buddy to revive them as has become a common mechanic in modern games. The story for the game revolved around a "prototype" gun called the MG106. MG stands for "Monster Gun." It was a gun designed to be completely modular with some pretty awesome attachments. These include a harpoon gun, a laser guided missile, a glue gun and a flamethrower. My copy of Gun Runner features a Prague Hotel level where you must scale the hotel with enemy thugs popping up at every turn. You eventually save the researcher that created the Monster Gun only to have her killed shortly after she gives the gun to you. Then you go to the top of the hotel and fight special enemies in SWAT gear. The level doesn't really have an end and just leaves you hanging out on the roof with no enemies left to kill. It also has a level where you are in Prague on the streets in a car chasing a van while enemy vehicles assault you. The CPU drives while you shoot, making this a rail shooter. This level also has a non-ending. The characters in this copy of the game are Inspector Tequila from Stranglehold and Vin Diesel from Wheelman, both Midway games. These characters and pretty much all the art in the game were just taken from other Midway games to create a prototype so these characters would not have been in the final game. Harpoon gun. Pull cover away, hit enemies with objects, clear pathways and solve puzzles One player shoots missiles and the other uses lasers to guide the missiles for a tag team Glue gun. Create cover, block entrances and incapacitate enemies Flamethrower Create a glue trail and light it on fire to cause havok
Thanks for joining and posting this. Doesn't look like something I would have bought but it's really nice to see the details of a game at such an early stage in development.
I don't know why, but I found this to be the coolest thing. The game looked pretty decent. I liked Strangehold, so I probably would have picked this up. Thanks a bunch for sharing with us!
I'm with you, MBMM. That glue gun looks pretty cool. It's of the same kind of arcadey, non-traditional shooter gun behavior that has become more popular recently with games like Just Cause. I wonder if this game could have been something interesting had Midway not gone under.
