On this day (its the 3rd in Japan now) the Sony Playstation was launched and it launched with 8 games, which was already one more then the Sega Saturn had to this point... You could have bought a Playstation and played a racer in Ridge Racer (or if you had a Saturn er Gale Racer), a shooter in Parodius Deluxe Pack (or if you had a Saturn you could er watch the Space ship in the front end) and a Fighter in Nekketsu Oyako (or if you had a Saturn you could play Virtua Fighter). Ironic that the Playstation had more 2D games on release then the Saturn did (Gale Racer was 2D sprite scaling...). So 15 years of decent games and some Sega fanboys not forgiving Sony. Here is to hoping in the next 15 years Sony get their finger out of their arse.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo Some of us are trying to forget.. - generic oldschool fan PS: Happy birthday nevertheless, you've been a worthy opponent and innovator =)
Fuck yes you are the best console ever. This gives me a nice feeling for some reason. PlayStation is the console that REALLY got me into gaming.
I certainly enjoyed the PS1. It was a wonderful system but I'm always going to be bummed they never released a RAM cart like Sega Saturn had which gave them wonderful ports of Metal Slug, X-Men Vs SF, Msh Vs SF, and SFZ3. Even still I have my PS1 still hooked up and ready to play.
Mixed feelings about this, sure the PS1 had a lot of great games, but it also started the godawful THREE DEE era of gaming which lasted from about 1995-1999: no matter how terrible they looked and played, every game had to be in 3D, even though many genres like platformers, fighters and shooters were much better in 2D :banghead: 3D really should've skipped a generation 'til they had figured out how to use it effectively, or at least talentless teams should've been forbidden by law from using it if they couldn't do more than another ugly FPS clone or broken platformer.
Sure it had a ton of crap, but it's not like previous generations were any better. It was a great introduction to 3D gaming.
I say Happy Birthday. No matter if you like or hate it (or Sony for that matter), the PlayStation was the birth of many succesful franchises, and a lot of fantastic games. So, congrats!
So what's wrong with the PSX? I always thought it was a interesting bit of kit. Sony should have included something about the Yaroze too as it was a pretty cool project and they should be proud of it.
I think the main problem with PSX was the ridiculous price. Still, a lot of people don't remember this, but it did at least introduce the XMB. I wish the PocketStation was there too, but at least there's a picture of it, so Sony hasn't completely forgotten it.
Me too! If it wasn't for the Playstation, I would have played outside all day long as a kid... and would now spend my money on something more important than gaming crap :icon_bigg Yay Playstation
On the other side of that story, if there was no playstation maybe I would of had 3 kids by now.. Congrads and thanks Sony for saving me lots of cash and major headackes
Ah, but the PSX wasn't marketed by the same team as the Playstation consoles hence it not really featuring in their list of items to commemorate. It was classed as an AV / Media unit and marketed by a different department. The fact that PS2 technology lurked in side was secondary.
The SCPH-1001 makes a good CD player, I'll say that much. It had some pretty good games on it, too, like MGS, Bushido Blade, Ace Combat 2, etc.
I also vote for the PS1 as best console ever. If Sony hadn't entered the game industry, it would still be in the dark ages. Developers in the 16bit era were totally pwned by Nintendo. Even with the shovelware game library, there were many fantastic games on the PS1. That was probably the best era to be in, even though I loved my SNES and Megadrive. I still remember the first time I played Ridge Racer and Wipeout on the PS1. Mind blowing at the time, it was.
what sets apart the SCPH-1001 from other audio players for that have the same output connections? what was the tech. included in this model of the ps1 that to this day makes it a collectible among audiophiles and ps1 collectors?
I'm not entirely sure. 2 things that might explain it are that it is supposed to have a good DAC (I think), and also it has RCA jacks in the back rather than a AV MULTI output. You're supposed to be able to modify it to sound even better. However, after witnessing the tinyness of the parts involved, I decided that it wasn't worth it to try. It sounds pretty good as it is.
