The power supply board which sits on top of the modem board appears to have been fastened more securely than the retail units, even with the screws removed it will not budge, I guess more glue and dont want to force it! Looking through the small gap between the two boards the wires are visible and it looks as if they do indeed connect to the modem board with the rear serial port attached to it.

Couldn't it be a standard debug kit? Like NR readers, etc...

    Nice!

The PSU is more securely fastened, but it should come off without too much effort. I noticed the same on my unit.

Cheers Pikkon. It`s very interesting kit, hopefully we`ll be able to unravel all of the mysteries surrounding it.

The small screw on the side of the Dev.Cas that holds the small docking piece of metal had to be removed for the PAL unit to fit flush against it.

Did you have to do the same Parris?

Just noticed this thread for the first time. Of all the people here to make guesses about the intended use, peekb should be the one getting the gold star. :)

Parris if you manage to get the software for the unit, PM me. Without the software it's not going to do too much.

Have a look at the underside, you'll see that you have to put the metal clip into a little slot underneath the unit. It's a bit tricky, but once it's on, you can screw it into place - that secures the DC to the base unit.

It all depends on what software is actually required for the kit.

Looks like that Altera chip gets about a bit, check the following item currently on Marketplace:

It's not detected as a SCSI device.

It was an auction for the Dev.Cas unit. The seller also had a SDK library disc I hadn't seen before (1.55J, if I recall correctly). Was that a full SDK like R9/10/11a or does the word "library" just mean it had additional device support and updates?

The buyer might be a member here. I suspect that spindle of GD-Rs that sold here a month or two ago is what he / she is slowly selling off. At least if they're a member here, the hardware has a better chance of being properly tested / used.

According to the lore (aka conjecture based on little snippets of information found out there) 1.55J includes at least one GD-R used to boot-strap the Dev.Cas.

Do you still have a link to that auction?

If you use the advanced search of completed listings on ebay.com, you can still find it:

Thanks. dreamcasthistory.com had a page about this before it went wonky. We can see it thanks to the Way Back Machine:

    http://web.archive.org/web/20041205141538/http://www.dreamcasthistory.com/sdk155.html

BTW: Fuck eBays policy of "protecting buyers identity". This is not the first time I've wanted to contact a seller and ask some questions.

I'd better kill my own rumour before it get's feet: I've had a quick look at SDK 1.55J now, and it is highly unlikely to help getting the Dev.Cas's running. There is no GD included and it mostly looks like what one would expect from a regular SDK. It's all in Japanese of course, so I could be missing something that might turn up on further analysis.

    Rise from the grave !

I've had a look at the documents of SDK 1.55J, and they do talk about the dev.cas.

I've found two places were they mention it: (translated from jap. into english):
(Note that the SDK 1.55J dates from 07/1999, before the release date of the Dev.Cas)

    "Sound Data development environment
    - work with the Sound Box (old environment)
The Sound Box is a special system to output sound from SCAT (Sound Creator's Assistant Tools) on the Macintosh. The Sound Box is connected to the Macintosh via SCSI.
    - work with the Dev.Cas (new environment. Planned to be released in 09/1999)
The Dev.Cas can be used as replacement of the Sound Box by connecting it to a Dreamcast. After having started the Dev.Cas & transferred the loader,
it becomes equal to the Sound Box seen from the PC."

    And:

    "
    - Sound Box (not produced anymore)
To be connected to a Mac (PPC604 or higher, MacOS 8.0 or higher recommended) via SCSI, to be able to use the Sound Tools.
Accessories: ac adapter, CD-ROM 'Sound Tools'

    - Dev. Cas (planned to be released in september)
The Dev.Cas functions as a simple development environment by
connecting to a normal Dreamcast. Cannot be used to create programs
for the Dreamcast, but can be used to check graphical data or create
    sound data.
Accessories: normal Dreamcast, ac adapter, SCSI cable, Dreamcast controller, power cable, CD-ROM "Dreamcast SDK (SEGA Library) Vol.1", manual, GD-ROM "Dev.Cas Boot disk"
    "

Now if somebody has the Dev.Cas Boot Disk and the "Sound Tools" CD-ROM, I'm interested to test them with my Dev.Cas :)

It would also be interesting if somebody has a SDK more recent than 1.55J...

Ah. Well dug. It would indeed be interesting to try and find the software for this.
