A console is a computer, it's not a Personal Computer - no. It's not a computer in the sense that you and i are used to. But strictly speaking it is a computer. Thanks for explaining the driver work but i kind of understood that. SEGA's approach to doing things just amazes me..

That's interesting, I read about a similar solution years ago. There you needed some software and a dial up modem for your PC. Basically you shared your connection through your PC with internet (whatever type) on one side of the PC and dial up dc on the other side. Think it's much cheaper and less bulky then what you're talking about but any knowledge is good knowledge so thanks for sharing :) .

That's what I'm talking about with the Raspberry Pi. It doesn't have to be a Raspberry Pi, of course, it can be a regular PC, but there are several problems with that setup:

    1. The only supported version of Windows is Windows 98, so you have to run Linux or use a Linux virtual machine in Windows
    2. You have to keep your DC hooked up to your PC which may not be convenient
    3. Your modem will not pick up automatically, so when the DC begins to dial into the game, you have to run over to your PC and type in a terminal command to tell the PC to pick up the connection, which is even more inconvenient
    4. If you have the revision B modem, you need to solder together a line voltage inducer into your telephone wire.

If you use a telephone line simulator, you no longer have to deal with #3 and #4, but if you invest in a telephone line simulator you might as well get the Netopia as well so you don't have to deal with #1 and #2.

The reason why I suggested using a Raspberry Pi is because then you wouldn't have to deal with #1 and #2 either. But you would still have to SSH into your Raspberry Pi with your PC to get it to pick up, so I guess it's still inconvenient with that. Unless, of course, you had a telephone line simulator.

Better than nothin. At least the games were optimized for 56k and with these methods you should get the most speed possible on a 56k line. When I was a kid I was lucky to get 2.2kb/s and a friend down the road got 4kb/s on the same ISP. Probably can do better than that too.

I never had internet as a little fart growing up so I never had to suffer the woes of dial up.

This one time I downloaded the 80mb FFVIII demo and transferred it from one machine to another via floppy. Finally getting 80+ parts on the second machine the batch script couldn't combine them due to limitations with the command line. Years later I learned how to work copy /b on my own.

    Goddamn that sucked.

You got lucky, the only way I knew how to split files at the time was something like hjsplit rather than WinZip or WinRAR.

Wonder what kids of today will bitch about in the future?

When their 64 or 128GB SD card is too small for their phones due to games, apps, pictures, videos, music, etc....

To be fair 64 and 128gb SD cards are kinda small depending on what you do. Just shooting "HD" video on my Galaxy Note II uses well over 100mb of space for less than a minute of actual video. If I were to record an hour I'm not sure how much space I'd actually need.

Of course 64gb is an awful lot of MP3s but I'd imagine some people out there insist on FLAC.
