I'm looking into buying this TV. Looks like on the net I can get it cheaper than that as well... even though I'd rather pick it up locally.

Anyways, I've not kept up w/ standards and whatnot, although I know HD stuff is out, and apparently will be in full swing in less than 2 years.

I think 22" is a good size, and I think I can get a mount that will allow me to throw it on it's side for TATE mode. Yeah, an HD CRT is easier and whatnot, but room is not that big by a long shot, and they're not THAT much cheaper.

    Any comments?

500:1 contrast ratio might be painfull.

Oohh... I didn't see that part.
I was viewing the 26" in the store, and it was beautiful... just a little bit bigger (and $1200 more) than what I'm looking for. :(

This one I can get locally (no shipping) for a few hundred bucks less than listed. 600:1 ratio.

I had the HP 32 inch one, and it had dead pixels all over, and for $2600 it better be damn flawless so back it went.

i believe LCD TV is yet to mature to the stage it's comparable to old CRT based TV. I'd been looking for LCD TV for my daughter this year but couldn't find anything satisfactory... and the smallest Plasma screen available was/is 32" which is ted big for her room. I've thinking of at around 20" would make nice fit. :)

Given the price reduction for ED PDP lately it's quite tempting to get one just for DVD/VCR viewing for missus. I've seen ED PDP for around A$2500 which is fantastic price for what it is.

    cheers

Considering how CRTs have like 2000:1 ratios, 1000+ is good. I agree that LCD TV's haven't matured enough.

Of course, they're going to get better, but I kind of need one now, ya know. I think HD LCD is pretty damn nice looking. I was given a 32" Plasma by my office as a wedding gift about a year ago. It's good, but the HD LCD looks much, much better. Less grain, clearer picture, better color. Especially at the 22" to 26" range, it's not quite big enough to look bad, if you know what I mean. Go to the shop and check out an Aquos next to an HD CRT.... they've come a long way. Maybe it's b/c I was that guy that said, "man, these things suck" when LCD first came out.

The hardest part will be getting the rotatable mount. They're all over the place for CRT monitors on a trading desk, but there's only like 2 for a wallmount on a TV.

and you will want technician to install that thing unless you don't mind your HD LCD TV falling off the wall from time to time... :-D

Yeah, that one is defintiely in the running. I never thought I'd buy Sharp products. I worked at an electronics retail outlet for a year or so in college, and all our Sharp products were so ghetto.

Also, it always lists the resolution at 1366 x 768, but never says it can do playback at 1080i. Anyone know why?

"the LC-26GA4U is an HDTV Monitor, which means it is compatible with 1080i and 720p signals from HDTV sources (separate DTV decoder required)."

It only says so once. I looked for one on eBay and all the pages never mentioned 1080i.

that contrast ratio is the thing that makes the dark colors look dark? "i had an LCD monitor like 2 years ago, but my bro punched it.... and it lthe black looked kinda grey..." if so, what is a good contrast ratio? is 800:1 great? or just ok? what about those mac monitors "30 inch one" isnt it better just to buy one of those :D? i've hear they are viewtiful ^_^

I dont' think those mac monitors have any type of convenient input to watch TV/videos with.

Kyuusaku; Yeah, I shoulda read the normal print, instead of the fine print.

I guess it really comes down to getting the mount I want.

Well, I need to play some games in TATE as well, so I need a rotatable mount (and yeah, the one the TVs come w/ suck balls). There's a local shop here that does installs and they're hunting a few down. They know of 1 for sure, but would like to give me a choice.

I can get that TV online for $1699 ($800 off retail, and about $600 cheaper than the stores) but they won't ship to Hawaii. I could ship to my parents, and then have my mom ship w/ her FedEx 75% off discount. Round about, but might be worth it.

For those of you that have bought things online --- how can a TV like the Aquos be offered for $1600 at one place, but it costs $2200 in the stores (and some other retailers online). Even Amazon has it for $1699.... do those stores mark stuff up THAT much?

    simple answer is yes.
when we bought our Plasma display the shop offered us the deal too good to pass. As they were closing down the owner wanted to sell the remaining stock and we picked up bunch of Marantz gears as well as the PDP at very good price - around 20% off on already lowered price and free delivery/installation. :) We did however bought extra warranty for next five years and had it returned to lab once for testing/upgrade for free of charge...

    cheers

I'm one of those "if it's too good to be true..." guys. The cheapst I've seen this one on the net is $1592... Amazon has it for $1699, but it's going to cost me an extra $50 for my mother to ship it to me (this particular item is only for continental US delivery). I think I'd rather spend the extra $100 and get it from Amazon, as they're a much more trustworthy name.

FYI, here's the best price I've found. Think shops like this are dodgy? I usually go for the 3 year $150 or so warranty. Yeah, it's 100% profit for them if it doesn't break, but if it does...

Yeah, i'm in the looking for a Sharp Aquos TV as well. Specifically, the 37 inch version.

My family has a Dell LCD, which sucks terribly when watching normal TV. It's decent, would be a lot better if we had a HDTV decoder...

By the time I save up enough money for the Aquos, they'll have Super High Def or something like that. :smt043
