Wires that are way too long will produce unpredictable behavior such as PS2 games being detected as PS1, PS1 games being detected as CDDA based discs and so on.

You got it. The only things the clones cant do (Modbo 4.0, Modbo 750, etc) is that PS1 boot sequence thing i said above and you cant upgrade/downgrade the firmware. If you try, you'll brick your chip and render your ps2 useless intill you take out the bricked chip or take out the bricked chip and install a new chip but who needs to downgrade or upgrade as the v1.93 is the last official matrix firmware and the most stable. V1.99/v2.0 chips/firmwares are unofficial and have issues mainly in PAL consoles but i still wouldn't trust those firmwares on any PS2.

If you get an original Matrix Infinity, upgrade to/stay at v1.93.
If you get a clone (Modbo 4.0, Modbo 750, etc) get a v1.93 chip.

Have to hold down circle on boot to get PS1 mode on my DMS3 Plus anyway. Good to know at least, thanks.

If you look at the actual chip, this is how you can usually tell:

If you get a PS2 pre-modded this how you can tell which version it is by holding down "Triangle + Circle" at startup (Before matrix logo shows):

Your welcome dude, just a couple more things.

You can use the "Triangle + Circle Method" to check the version of original Matrix Infinity's too.

Also if you plan on getting a clone chip, just remember that with most sellers (mostly China sellers), they usually dont specify what version it is and there is also fakes that wont save settings in the Matrix Infinity menu shown above.

You can save yourself a headache if you buy a clone from me, Bad_Ad84 or Jinn ^_^.

    I just fitted a modbo 4.0 v1.93 in a V8 ps2 today runs like a dream :)

    (Sort of off topic but)

The H (?) point on the modbo 4 is required for a Australian PAL PS2
Aussie PS2's seem to only like Version 1.93 chips (Matrix/MoDBo)

Also if you plan on buying chips from Australia stay away from OZModChips, they have terrible customer service and charge way too much, like $40 for FreeMCBOOT + Shipping!!

Congratulation on your first successful install.

Long wire can cause some side effects that can take an inexperience installer hard to troubleshot. Since you did this system for yourself then you can have a messy install and if something happens you can try to fix it.

Many of the experience modders on this site are commission to install mods and that's why we care how our installs are done. I'm sure you wouldn't want to pay someone to do the mod and down the road not working and you opening it and finding a mess.
    Example:

I post picture of my install to give customer a piece of mind that I took care of their systems. It also helps someone else trying to install a chip get an idea on where to mount the chip and how to route the wires.
I would have installed that DMS3 how I installed this DMS4, which I did over the weekend for a member at AtariAge.

Over all you did a great job and if you are up to it shorten the wires a bit and double check them, DMS3 autoboots PSX games and their is not need to hold O to load them. Also, make sure you are running the 2.4 firmware.

I've read conflicted information regarding the DMS3 Plus. Also DVD auto detection was only added with the very final firmware version that I am running which is 2.4 Beta 7. Holding L1 on startup boots to the DMS menu and holding circle boots to the PS1 mode.

I did offer on a forum to install some chips for a few people but I'm not confident in shipping and if something goes wrong then that would be a hassle so I just left it. I'm certainly not knocking the tidiness of your installs either. I'd certainly think your installs to be more reliable for sure.

Any tips regarding management of the length of kynar wire?

I'm very tempted to get another SCPH-39003 and install a Ghost 2 v2 in it more cleanly. Or simply swap a Ghost 2 v2 in for the DMS3 Plus.

I'm well aware of Drakon and his hot glue. I don't think I've ever charged for a console modification other than parts cost either, but that's because it was mostly work for friends.

I have attached a PDF files which was in the DMS3 site for proper install.

Use mounting tape, this will help you route the wires and keep them short.

It really seems to me like it doesn't auto boot PS1 or DVDs typically. Contrasting info on the net but how I have played about with the machine leads me to believe so. Holding circle boots PS1 games from any region, backup or not. Otherwise it is in PS2 mode, which also boots fine.

    Got me worried now..
