good news is he ripped it and his brother who owns the disc is willing to sell it, we're trying to convince them to sell it to the guy who released agartha and others

he also might have me walk him through the process of being able to boot it on a retail DC, so if theres anything significant we can still find out in the meantime

i just hope a collector doesn't offer an insane amount of $$$ and this disappears forever...

They might have a hard time finding help to selfboot it if all they want is to sell is and still be able to play; have the cake and eat it too. That said, they can do all they want since it's theirs.

Their reason for the GDI not booting on dreamshell is also incorrect, the SD2 is irrelevant for a GDI. I don't even know if dreamshell supports WinCE.

 

What legal concerns does he have? Would Valve really care about the release of a new build of a previously leaked game?

The concern about legal reprocussions on a 20 year old beta is unnecessary. Anything pre 360/PS3 is pretty much a safe bet. It's the owners choice but unnecessarily cautious. Well done to the community here for their selfless help. Let's hope that it is reciprocated somewhere down the line.

I've only played HL2 with EP1 and 2 and never played the first one.
So I was planning to play the first one from IDE (less loading times) whenever I get my dreamcast installed with citrus3000psi's hdmi solution...

To clarify, we helped them rip it to GDI, which is a good idea for preservation in the end.

They will probably not find much help selfbooting it if they plan to sell the disc and use the selfbooting to still play it, though.

It's easy to say that when the situation is hypothetical.

If they somehow want to hit you with the full extent of the law, your be in trouble. They probably won't, fair enough, but they could.

 

WinCE games don't work on the serial port, but they work using IDE! I believe there is still hope, we did our best to help him rip it, lets just wait for the best
