In the time I've been gone I've been watching a ton of You Tube videos the best of which are Metal Jesus Rocks Hidden Gems Videos. More than any other You Tube Channel He's helped me find a bunch of really good games that I'm still playing a month or so later. I did a search found we have no such thread so why not post one. I would define a Hidden Gem as a good to great game that either due to poor reviews or no promotion didn't sell well or was popular initially but buzz ended quickly. Here are some to get us started Binary Domain- This was a Metal Jesus suggestion. Voice Command Gears or War with Robots is probably the best but not entirely accurate description. The story was written by the same person who writes the Yakuza series. The Levels are pretty linear and it's paced like Sega's Light gun games. The Highlight of the game for me are the boss fights which are some of the most fun boss fights I've been in, in a while. It only sold about 24,000 copies even though it gets glowing reviews. Glad I picked this one up. Bulletstorm- I've owned this on the 360 and now I own it on the PS3. It's made by the people behind the Painkiller series and also after this they did Gears of War Judgement. It's an FPS but a very creative one that has you thinking up unique ways of killing enemies using a leash weapon and a kick and there are some pretty satisfying weapons too. The Points you get for killing enemies buys you upgrades for your weapons which really don't help that much more. It has a good sense of humor and it's very colorful it's not a drab the Apocalpyse came and now everything is dull and dead atomosphere. That's refreshing too. Probably a good game to play for anyone that was disappointed by Duke Nukem forever which came out around the same time. Syndicate-Another Metal Jesus suggestion. I know exactly why this game didn't sell. "They took a legendary RTS and made it into a soulless first person shooter FUCK THAT GAMES, FUCK EA" It's an understandable sentiment but interestingly enough. The Game is devoid of the typical EA Bullshit. The game itself is far from souless. It's a tactical FPS so going in guns blazing will just get you killed. The Graphics are very nice and it's HARD it's not by any means an easy game. Plus it has a unique brain hacking thing where you can make enemies turn on each other or Kill themselves, which makes for some fun scenarios. But did I mention this game is hard? I only got up to the first boss fight who no matter how many bullets you pump him full of doesn't seem to want to die. I'll probably start over on an easier difficulty. Another draw back is that it has the diarrhea of music in it's soundtrack- DUBSTEP. I don't think Dubstep will be the music of choice in 2068. But those flaws not with standing what I did get to play was enjoyable and I'll start it over again once I beat Binary Domain. So those are 3 of mine, I'll have more. Feel free to drop some of yours, it's why I made this thread to help others discover those overlooked and underselling games.
Bloody hell, I watched those Metal Jesus Rocks Hidden Gems Videos the other day. Have you been taking a sneak look at my watch list? From his videos I bought Alice and err... bugger, I forgot the title now but it's a 3rd person shooter where you star as the role of a comeback action hero who's been thrown in to this glitchy world of gaming parodies.
The Return of Matt Hazard or something. I'm going to check that one out too. The Funny thing is even though they were 360 hidden gems videos. I ended up buying them all for PS3. His list could have used a few more 360 exclusives there were a ton of 360 exclusive games nobody bought that were real hidden gems. Like Lost Odyessy. Chrome Hounds was a good choice I played a small bit of that when I first got my 360 7 years ago.
If were going for imports i'd say Virus for the Sega Saturn, as for Xbox 360 hidden gems i'll say Dark Sector, Resonance of Fate (A pretty awesome looking tactical Jrpg type), F.E.A.R series, Lost Planet series, and a bunch of XBLA titles back around 2009 & 2010!
I have F.E.A.R. 2 Thought it was really good to be honest. The ending was weak though. Binary Domain is a must buy game. Forget what the reviews say, it's very good. Never played Lost Planet 1 but I have 2 and 3. 3 isn't anything like 2 but still a great action game with amazing graphics in places.
I'm always down for Saturn hidden gems. Metal Jesus hasn't done a Saturn video yet, just Dreamcast. Binary Domain really is too good to have sold the jack and shit it has. The PS3 version has an annoying inital load but it lets you fiddle around with Dan's Phone and moving the controller makes him move the phone. Like I said before the boss fights in Binary domain are the stars of the show. Plus Faye is HOT. Easily in my top 10 hottest video game women. I just wish I knew why it didn't sell more than it did 24,000 copies is jack and shit compared to AAA games that don't have half the love and care poured into it. Just about any of the existing Playstations aside from the PS4 have Hidden Gems out the bung hole. I don't have time to list all of them though.
Alpha Protocol It was pretty much bashed by reviewers, but it's a good James Bond/Mission Impossible-esque action RPG with tons of different options for tackling the game as well as many different endings, plus an interesting dialog system where you never know what your character will say since you can only pick his attitude, not his exact words. The Return of Matt Hazard was pretty funny, too bad the gameplay was utter trash.
Another would be Way of the Samurai 3 & 4 (well 3 being better imo) but they're both really good hidden gems you gotta checkout!
Alpha Protocol was another Metal Jesus suggestion. The game it self would be shit if not for the license but if you're a comic fan Deadpool is worth playing just don't expect the best game ever. It's competent and has some good references to both comic and game.
I dont like this channel. But there's also a good bunch of somehow underrated Playstation 2 games on teh2dgamer channel. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF3DBFB56540FA3A0 Not talking (thank god), just the video and some text.
I'm gonna go way back to the NES for my next batch of Hidden gems. Either time forgot them or they just aren't collector wet dreams. Deja Vu, from the creators of Shadow Gate, a noir game 20 some years before LA Noire. Metalstorm, a mech gravity swap run n gun from Irem. Air Fortress has some success but isn't talked about anymore, it's half shmup and half Metroid, poured hours into it as a kid.
I got some NES hidden gems to throw into the hat North and South a pseudo RTS mini gaming strategy game pretty fun for 2p. Shingen the ruler IMO a better game in terms of pacing and battle system then the Keoi strat micro managing games. Shadow of the ninja a solid ninja platformer much more forgiving than Ninja Gaiden. Finally S.C.A.T which by all intents and purposes does not represent feces at all would be in my eyes an NES version of forgotten worlds.
Disaster: Day of Crisis One of the most surprisingly good games on the Wii, it's a mix of exploration, light gun shooting (very Time Crisis-like), driving and Wiimote minigames in an original disaster relief scenario. Throughout the game you go through several different disasters ranging from earthquakes to hurricanes, saving people and fighting a squad of terrorists who have stolen a nuke along the way. Yeah, the plot is pretty ridiculous. One of Nintendo's most original IPs in recent memory, but unfortunately sold badly in Japan and Europe, which led to the US release being canceled.
Panic Restaurant is a good NES platformer but it's crazy expensive now as are alot of those late NES Taito games. I'm really raking my brain here trying to think of more forgotten NES games.
The Otogi games on the Original Xbox, PN03 on Gamecube (which Remember Me reminds me of) Crimson Sea on XBOX Classic, Voodoo VInce on XBOX Classic (they need to revive that for the One) I'm drawing a blank but there's that From Software Ninja game on the 360.
I agree about Otogi. PN03 had pretty good graphics, and it had the potential to be a good game, but the controls ruined it. It just wasn't very fun because the controls were so bad.
I loved Binary Domain also. Shadowrun was a GREAT multiplayer FPS game - I understand people didn't like that they took a cyberpunk RPG and turned it into a class based FPS but it was REALLY good.
Hidden gems? I don't really know how popular these fami/NES games are, so sorry if they aren't very "hidden". Joy Mech Fight - this fighter came out very late in the famicom's life. It is surprisingly smooth. The characters are HUGE because they are made up of several sprites. Metal Storm - a nice platformer with a cool gravity switching mechanic. the controls one this game are spot on, the graphics are nice, and the music is awesome. published by Irem! Cocoron - might not be hidden, but this is a rockman-esque platformer where you can heavily modify your character, and the order in which you pick the levels partly affects how they are laid out. Great replay value.
Oh yeah Ninja Blade on Xbox 360 was a pretty great game imo! kinda better than Ninja Gaiden 2 & 3. Worth the pick up and very challenging & fun!
