Hmm, what do do with this Mac?

Update OSX as far as it'll go?
Linux instead? (there's still no Linux+PPC version of Flash... right? ugg.)
Something creative I haven't considered?
Are there any weird things about running a server on PPC, or is it the same as long as I know the OS?

If it's old enough, dual boot OS 9 and OS 10.4 and you can use it for anything. Video, gaming, web dev/programming, internet, media, server, etc.

 

You can easily run 10.5 on that thing, great machine for day to day use/internet etc.

 

I'm wondering if, at the very least (if I find I don't have the room for another toy), I can make my father use it. Maybe he won't fuck this one up, and I'll stop having to fix his crap.
(Hah, I should probably just run a GP on him)


What's cool and on OS9? (looks like there is a version of 9.2.2 that will run)

 

Dude, seriously. Why would you run OS9 when you can run 10.4 (or maybe even 10.5)? OS9 is utterly useless nowadays.

AFAIK PPC macs are no longer supported so you wont get any updates.

WWSLD? (What Would Shadowlayer Do?) take all the crap inside and trow it away, get a kickass 1366 motherboard and 720 CPU (at least!) among other highend stuff, and very important: a snow tiger update disc which for $30 is a steal considering it contains the full OS plus license and updates.

It'd probably be difficult (or at least time consuming) to gut it and be able to mount a different motherboard in it.

alright. Gut it, make it into an aquarium, then shoot live rounds at the components. Than you're 1) having fun because shooting stuff is awesome 2) have a new aquarium.

Check if MorphOS runns on it, and if it does, run it

 

Install 10.5 Cut a hole in the side of it, fit a cheap LCD in the gap. Hook it up to a car battery. Put the car battery on a strap over your shoulder and walk around the city with it while smacking the screen shouting "LOOK AT ME, MY PRE-ORDERED iPAD ARRIVED!!!!"

I think that a G4 will work find for most everyday tasks, although G4s notoriously have problems with Flash.

I'm sure that, as long as he can get his head around it not being Windows, your dad will do OK with it.

 

1) dress like you're from the future, only 5 years however. so slight fashion changes.

2) carry iPod Touch

3) Ask Apple store for iPad Nano accessories

Install Linux onto it and stick in afew HD's will make a awesome server!

 

If it where me I'd either turn it into a file server or a general use box, depending on which I needed more.

ATM is a general box I can give my Sister to do some homework with, thus, if you want to part ways with it I'll happily take it off your hands (Eg How much are you asking?)
