Yes I'm back after yelling at all of you. but hey nobody knows more about the Saturn than you guys. Today I got the wonderful Salamander Deluxe pack from well somewhere in Japan when I opened it up I saw what looked like 2 holes one actually was a hole right through the where the data is right behind where the Saturn globe is. So You'd think the disc would have read problems? Well my saturn booted it just fine and when I popped it in a computer all the files were readable. Yet the hole is clearly on the data section of the disc. Does Salamander have Dummy files that balloon the iso size to 450mb? the games themselves aren't taking up much disc area all the Omake is there and the little hidden FAQ word file was all there. So I'm stumped. Holes in the disc, yet the disc is readable. Edit never mind it affects a file in Salamander 2.... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU Boss1.2 2nd edit. It was a sound a file.
I've been keeping up with Retrocore. So there really wasn't much reason to come back. I was also posting in the Happy Console Gamer group on facebook. So THIS little tune is replaced by a skipping noise <br> I told the seller it's up to him if he wants to compensate for it or not. See that Gash on the disc? That's where the Salamander 2 boss music is
Damn... have you tried filling it in with a mechanical pencil? In all seriousness, how did the seller describe the disc? Did he mention that it had scratches/damage? Did he say it was working fully? If it's at all different from what he described, I'd ask for a full refund.
He described it as being in very good condition. The games are playable I sent him this picture as well. I feel bad though the guy was really nice, he even made me an Origami helmet. I'm happy with the seller, the game, ehhhhhhhhhh I would at least like partial compensation that boss track is kind of bad ass. Here's what gets me, this game is 16 years old. Are Japanese shmup players so hardcore they don't care if the boss music is missing? Granted it's not the greatest boss track ever but it's one of those bad ass Konami tracks none the less. How did this go unnoticed for 16 years?
When I bought my Saturn locally years ago, the store owner said "the Saturn laser barely has issues", now I guess I understand where he coming from
I would ask him for a full refund and tell him you'll send it back. Nothing rude or mean about that - that's how business is supposed to work. Do you really want to play a game with missing content, anyway? That would drive me insane, especially if the item was not cheap. Also, have you played through the game in its entirety? It might have other effects that aren't immediately apparent.
Yeah I beat the game. no other problems I transferred all the files to a computer too and only 1 file didn't make it over. the seller has another copy so maybe he'll send it over.
Damn, that is a pain...but then again, really shows how great the Saturn is, even holes in discs can't deter it!
Yeah it's amazing that with that huge gash and 2 smaller holes in the disc the only thing affected was the salamander 2 boss music. Granted I may never know if more things are afffect since Salamander and Life Force are pretty hard. Maybe down the line I'll get another copy There must be a story behind the copy I have now. Are Japanese SHmuppers so Hardcore they don't care if there isn't boss music? I don't know but the fact the disc disc even plays at all does indeed attest to how great the Saturn truely is and I want MORE! There's a guy in the Happy Console Gamer group on Facebook that has EVERY Saturn shumup. BUT Salamander and Gradius.
it's possible. But usually they're just pits, there are two of those too but the main thing was that gash in the photo I don't think bit rot manifests like that. If it's bit rot this would be the first disc out of a few thousand I've found it on.
I hope it isn't really a hole exposing the data layer of the disc. You wouldn't want progressing oxidizing of the data layer as that would eventually cause you to lose much more.
I'm going to buy another copy down the line. I inspected the disc and it doesn't look like the previous owner took very good care of it. I also noticed some early bitrot on my Copy of X-men VS Street Fighter, but the more prestine the Disc the less likely it seems they'll rot out. SO the next question is this How common is bit/disc rot in Saturn discs? Out of the maybe 50 or so Saturn games I only saw two examples and neither are impacting readability. I also checked a few Dreamcast discs with Reported rot and nothing but in the cast of my Dreamcast discs I'm the original owner of most of them and the entire time I owned them they have been kept in a dry wooden container.
I know exactly what is affected on the disc My testing was to transfer the files to a computer off the disc the computer read every last file but Boss2.1 had an errror about half way through reading the file which as I stated before was the boss music for Salamander 2. I may never know if there's data loss in Salamander or Life force since those games are quite difficult. So yeah down the line I plan on getting another copy hopefully a more prestine one. My Copy of Street Fighter the Movie, just stops working and goes to the Saturn CD player whenever I fight Sawada. Either the Saturn is warning me or the scratches on that disc run too deep.
