Is Rumble Fish (the first) any good? I saw it at the HotZone arcade but never stopped to play it.

If it's good i might get the PS2 port as well.

As for VF5, wasn't it announced for PS3?

Never played it myself personally, but word on the street was that the game looked good but the control was so-so along with some questionable hitbox detection.
I'm guessing it probably has that loose/sloppy feel that the Guilty Gear games feature.

As for why sushi bar is almost impossible to find = no idea. I asked the owner of my regular game center in japan and even he didn't know. Oh well I'm sure it will beoome apparent eventually.

    (OT)

Now for "The Rumble Fish". I really like it, I did not at first, I found it cheap and very unfair. I'll just go through some quick points, but remember - I really like this game!

It does not really have the loose feel you refer to SuperGrafx, while certain hits feel very weak, others have really solid hits. it does "feel" right, although some of the aircombos make the characters feel light, but the ground work "feels" right and not like the feather light GG with no sense of power with the normal moves. There is loads of screen flash so that really adds to the sense of power, particularly when you break someone's clothes and then supercancel, the screen flash is very well used indeed.

So yeah, the game looks really nice - although there are some holes in the animation, also some of the hit effects and special graphics are really beautiful. Visually I have little to fault here, needless to say the ps2 has to think about the graphics quite a bit - but it is not too bad.

Control takes some getting used to, especially as most of the combos require VERY quick input which annoys some people. Other than that, the controls have never annoyed me, although it is very unforgiving on certain moves, and sloppy on others. Also some moves are completely pointless! Even some supers have no use at all, but this is a symptom of most first time fighters.

Now major issues, some characters are simply stronger than others. Heavy balance issues, but seeing as you will probably never play against anyone (human) at this game - no problem! The sequel removes most of these issues btw.

Guard cancelling is too cheap to use and can be abused all too easily, not unlike SVC chaos.

The computer always seems to out time you on throws (read - ALL the damn time). I am playing this on the hardest difficulty, but the computer seems to abuse throwing you on really odd frames of animation.

Bosses - oh they rock, but they are silly hard on max difficulty. One of the hardest games I have ever played infact. The hidden boss in particular owns you all the time... However when you unlock the two secret characters they are actually changed so they are (almost) balanced to use - great feature IMO. Also there is a character from the second game available in this ps2 version, but she is also toned down in places to fit in with the original cast.

For the positives, there are some fun combos, although nothing really inventive. Looks good. Voices sound good, music is decent. Actually difficult. Lots of complex systems to get into. And I do like the character design on a couple of people. It is really cool to see your character damaged over the fight, take viren - he starts with a normal tracksuit, then as he is beaten up you get to see the bombs strapped to his chest, knuckle dusters, etc that you could not see at the start. Nice level of detail overall.

I say "go buy", but I love almost all 2D fighters.

Pretty good work describing the game's mechanics, Warakia.

    Thanks!

I just wanted to mention some points that probably are not mentioned in reviews that are all over the internet.

If anyone wants more indepth play mechanics I'll start up a new thread. There is actually quite a lot to the game. (but I doubt many people own it.) The sequel still has not got the kind of recoginition that even snk rehashes get - but a lot of people I know rate it very highly, me included.)

Shikigami no Shiro III is out... they have it running on 3 cabs at Hey! As expected, it looks pretty bad... well, the backgrounds anyway. If you can enjoy a good shooter despite this, then you'll probably like it. I personally think the characters are way too different.

Well I have never enjoyed Shikigami's graphics. I have always found the bullets to look good, but they look faintly odd against the backgrounds.

As for the different characters, I actually quite like the fact that I play the game totally differently from one of my friends, simply because of the character choice. But it means that you don't get the balance of games with limited choices of characters. Some bosses on shikigami 2 are comically easy with certain characters or bomb attacks!

Oh well, any shooter is a good thing in my book. Although I don't rate shikigami that highly I do like the music, sound and the control feels really precise. Well, I shall hold out for the first videos.

I don't mind if characters are different, but the scores dramatically change depending on the character. At shmups, they basically have to make a high score table for each character.
