Hotline Miami Prototypes

About a month ago some user posted two Hotline Miami prototypes on the HotlineMiami reddit page. The post was taken down pretty quickly, but I managed to download the two builds while they were up. I'd credit the person who dug these up, but his name has seemingly vanished. If anyone knows the original poster of these, please do tell so I can update this post.

Cocaine Cowboy build: I think this is the one Devolver demonstrated in their stream back in 2013. I'm not 100% sure, but they look very similar. It has 10 test levels (which are still left in the final game's files) and pretty clunky gameplay.

Decadence build: This is a weird one, I have never seen it before. It has the Jacket's apartment intros and completed levels, but no outros. Similar to the Cocaine Cowboy build, it only has one song during the gameplay: Lady by Chromatics. The game abruptly stops after competing Decadence.

I know where these came from and know how it happened.
Was wondering if/when they'd be dropped.

 

Where did these come from then and how did it happen? I am a massive fan of these games and I figure this is going to be an interesting story.

 

I'm having difficulty remembering the details right, so whoever knows it better feel free to correct me.

Essentially source code and builds got leaked somehow some time ago. I have no idea by who but I have been told such has been around but in a few hands exclusively. Guess someone shared and someone just said "fuck it" and put it up.

Basically the same with Battlefront 3 but on a smaller scale by far (but less hands exchanged).

 

Interesting. Reminds me of the whole Half Life 2 leak back in the day.

Also I tried running the 2 builds but it was a no go. Crash every time. Maybe its because I'm on windows 10.

 

run in compatibility mode. shoot for win7
that or maybe you lack the redistributables

 

Maybe. I tried running it in compatibility mode set to windows 7 then 8 and still crashed. Says it couldn't create an event.

 

No idea. someone else will step forward to help im sure.

 

I played through Cocaine Cowboy on windows 10, it had me install something which I cant remember but it worked fine.

Nevermind. Restarted my pc and it seemed to do the trick. I guess directplay didn't work until I restarted.

 

It just made me recall back at BGS 2013, Hotline Miami 2 was playable, but there was also Dying Light, there was no such security for PCs, heck, even in one of them the game crashed and no one from the Nvidia staff went there, I could have just bought an pen drive and copied for me.

 

That build hasn't been leaked, though. These two builds were passed around Devolver prior to release. There are two HM2 protos floating around; one build from 2013, which is older than the first demo and a later, almost final build. Neither of them are available for public, unfortunately.
