    Hello,
I'm thinking to buy PS3 debugging station for like 250$ - 300$(people don't know their value on market and have no potential buyers on local market) from one of my local personal contacts who have no use for it.
But problem is that i never had such console (i even never installed debug firmware) before and have no idea how to test it.

Basically all i surely know that:
-I should read "PS3 Test" on it
    -It should DEXXZZZZ not CEXXZZZZ
    -It should have different XMB

As i understand thats not enough because everyone who changed faceplate, sticker and firmware have a chance to sell me retail unit as debugging station.

I need this console only to play betas, but currently i have no betas to come and test it and have no idea how to properly burn it.

Do you have it for sell? Also your thread is in the wrong section as the moderators or admin will move it to the right one for you ;) also if your talking about a ps3 test the xmb is the excat same but with more options/features and ability play homebrew

There's additional options, like "debug options" in settings and "install package" in game.

But those would also show if a debug FW is installed on a retail.

To be 100% sure you definitaly need additional software.
One thing definitaly not working on retails with debug FW would be TargetManager connecting to it.

You can also try the HDCP OFF option, doesn't work on retails either - but then you'd need a way check if HDCP is really off.

Yeah because the unit doesn't have alot of restrictions than what retail units have :) like ability to play homebrew, debug options lets you change different regions and free space ram, also app_home is included with it, etc.

If you only have access to the XMB there are some ways to tell that the unit really is a debug verses a hacked retail unit.

    1. Under either audio or video you should not see search for servers. Every debug firmware that I've worked with does not allow DLNA discovery.
    2. In the XMB go to the software update section and chose update via storage card. At the bottom of the screen there should be a minimum version number listed which is typically lower than the current version installed. You should also note that on the more recent firmwares (2.00 or above I think) you can install from the Hard Drive.
    3. If the unit happens to have games or game data installed on it, select it with the triangle button and see if the *Check option is there and able to be used. If you can use it see what information comes up. This should only work on debug units (so far.)

If you have ability to put in discs or cards you can do the following.
    1. Insert a blu-ray movie or dvd-movie. On a real debug it will scan the media but then it should not be able to star the disc.
    2. Insert a memory card that has a retail PKG file on it. A real debug unit running firmware 1.60 or above will not be able to install it.

So any hacked retail unit reads dvd/bluray, right?

Installing debug FW onto a retail messed up BD playback as well - or can mess it up, at least.

@Hellcat if so isn't using a debug fw on retail work if doing so in recovery via usb drive? Isn't that actually possible? Thanks!

Problem is that seller exchanged ps3 debugging station for used PSP...
    This is the FAIL!
    He deleted phone contacts....

    This is Russia!!!!11111
I remember i read manual "how to modchip ps1 console.different models".
Guy also showed how to modchip Net Yaroze and make it automatically selecting PAL region. I have no idea why he modchipped it - its a secret for me.
After they try to install some firmware and failed they say - its a useless and its better to buy retail ps3.
    Thats the problem.
