Anybody pick one up today thanks to the massive price dump on them?

I grabbed a 32gb this morning from staples (wanted 16 but they sold fast). Man it was close that I got one since the guy behind me got the last one they had.

Sure this thing is a dead device in a month but for $170 ($150+tax) for a 32gb unit, i'm not complaining. It does web videos pretty damn well.

    No I missed out.
Completely out of stock in my area. :(

EDIT: If anyone can still get these at the aforementioned prices, let me know.
    I am interested in one.

Kinda OT, but I read HP are looking to sell their whole PC division. Whoa :-0

They are. They bought up another company which they will combined with their PC division and spin it off into another company for potential sale.

They bought a UK company called Autonomy and will basically be refocusing their company on software and business solutions (think Sega to some degree - out of the hardware business). Good article about this in the Economist online.

For those who still want one in the USA. Bestbuy will be selling their stock tomorrow (previously the pulled all of the stock instead of selling them at $100/$150).

Got a 32GB Touchpad through HP's small business store this morning. Took about an hour to finally get it working. So many errors on their site.

You realize HP's dropping support for WebOS (the OS that the Touchpad uses) right? Which means, no updates, no new apps, nothing. Which makes it basically useless for anything but web browsing. I think they're offering refunds on some of them.

Wish I'd had the money for one. Wouldn't mind something in-between my phone and laptop to keep in my bag. Especially something not so damn valuable, which is why I don't take my lappy with me hardly ever.

Ignoring the app side of things. Purely as a web browser this thing is far better then an iPad as it actually plays not just flash but full web videos pretty damn well. The only thing it doesn't do is silverlight (which means no netflix) but I only know of a slim number of sites that use it. Looking past that, this thing is a pretty damn good skype device with a camera that is even better then the one in iPad 2.

Also Homebrew people have already released a few patches that improve the unit above the normal firmware and you can overclock this ****er to 1.6ghz. They're also working on porting Android to the device right now (and the team behind it is more then capable at getting it done).

So for my needs, this thing is perfect and better then an iPad and it only cost me $170 in total.

Hell if I actually wrote iPad apps, I'd be considering porting my stuff to webOS right now. There is going to be well over 500,000 new users thanks to this weekend and a sizable chunk will give the store a look over. Angry Birds is definitely going to see a sizable jump in downloads on webOS.

I thought the same thing and someone is already on it.

My reasons for not getting one:
1)$100-150 now, but $60-80 later when people realize what they bought is a dead product
2)I didn't get my Financial Aid check (on schedule at least) and had to (almost) max out two credit cards to pay for books and such. Praise to Thor I had my class fees waivered
3)Until Android gets ported to a reasonably stable state you're stuck with WebOS and what few applications are worthwhile

I'd LOVE to buy one just in case #1 is completely wrong and they end up going for $300. Barnes and Noble had some available last night in both flavors and if you can get through to HP.com they had some as well. Or at least weren't listed as "out of stock".

HP.com still has stock from the looks of it, but the question right now is, can you get through the site long enough to make an order before it errors out. =P

#1 might or might not happen. Maybe a year when everybody moves on but for now I think enough people are going crazy to get one that the demand will stay high for the near future. Hell people are able to sell units on ebay and get $200+ for the 16gb units.

Still again, if I get stuck with webOS (doubtful, there really seems to be a strong drive to get android on this asap), the web browser alone on the unit makes it worth what I paid for it.

I actually tried to find one but didn't succeed, at $100 you really can't beat that price for a tablet even if it did get killed off

I think you'd still be able to turn ebay profit atleast for a bit, I think general population thinks its something they need now that 'everyone' is buying it. Someone on SD made a good point though, ebay had hardly any before the announcement and now it is FLOODED with stock, and HP is receiving huge shipments of returns / final production stock throughout this week which will just saturate the market even more.

I'm sure its still gonna be marked up though for a while

Oh yes I'm sure the demand is keeping the price high, hell on NPR this morning they mentioned how fast it was selling. That news will disseminate down to the regular papers and news outlets within the week probably driving up eBay sales.

I'm also not so sure I'd enjoy having one of these due to its spec sheet. I played with a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the GUI had a noticeable lag compared to my Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S class). Thing is my Captivate is a single core A8 as compared to the Tab 10.1 which has a dual core nVidia Tegra chip. Theoretically that should make it run much smoother but I guess they've yet to do much in the way of SMP optimizations?

Not sure how the Snapdragon compares to the A8 but I don't think it'll be much snappier than my Captivate is. Enough for browsing websites and using the Kindle app sure. But lately I've been looking at how well my purchases will perform in the coming years after purchase and with the TouchPad, even if it gets Android, doesn't look like it'll be pleasing in 2-3 years. Particularly with phone hardware jumping leaps and bounds while disseminating into the tablet market.
