Same here, I was a bit surprised when I read the article. No good reason for why she won... Maybe it was the 4 t-shirts that just put her collection above the rest. (click on the Images button in the article to see a slightly bigger and zoomed out pic, still nothing special though) In any case, great collection of nintendo stuff Alan.
Man, if badly done cosplay could win you a contest, then just imagine what could happen with other contests: A fat Aeris with a few FF games and plushies winning a square contest V.S. someone who has every single sqaure AND enix game in every region with every guide, and even prototypes Square doesn't even know private collectors have!
Yep, and this is the spitting image of Vegeta. I dont understand cosplayers, either, but they are fun to look at and make fun of.
Who's the duck dude on the Final Fantasy VII picture? I mean, not who the guy is, but which character is he supposed to be? It's been a while since I played the game, but I'm fairly certain I didn't encounter a duck beaked, green haired, sunglasses wearing dude.
Maybe he's from a different game and he just posed for the picture with Final Fantasy guys? He sure doesn't look like chocobo to me. I mean, you can see that they made an effort making their costumes so that they match the characters in the game. The guy is just wearing some "funny" glasses, a duck beak, has a yellow blanket for crying out loud, and has his hair dyed green. Maybe it's just something only cosplayers get. "... And this one time, at the cosplay, everybody dressed to match the characters... But the chocobo guy tressed the opposite... and it was soooo funny!"
Whoa WTF? that Tifa seems like she's a little overweight... And the black guy is a painted white kid! what year is this photo from? 1920?
Contest winners NEVER have the best collection. I learned this lesson when I was very young and after entering contests like this one for a decade as a kid I learned my lesson for life. From a marketing perspective the winner cannot be intimidating or have a collection unobtainable by the average customer. A good example was the starwars collection contest that came out during episode II. In the star wars community the top collectors are well known and there was no way any of them were going to win. In the end the winner had a small collection that I could have attained in 3 months if I tried hard. The collection has to be obtainable in the eyes of the consumer or its useless as a marketing tool. The winner also has to be young and somewhat normal looking to the contest judges. This criteria rules out all real collectors in any hobby.
I think it's more the "hardcore" (read: Nerd) gamers that get all hot and bothered about girl gamers rather than "casual" gamers.
Read: Bad Cosplay I think its god awful Cosplay as a Chocobo. Its more likely than you think. Im guessing he tried to dye his hair yellow and it turned out green. In all seriousness, the Vegeta nerd actually HAS a good costume, but he doesnt look like the character at all. I saw a girl once that was the spitting image of Askua (from Evangelion) in a Denny's parking lot once, and I think she would cosplay well. I think I would cosplay well as a Space Marine from Dawn of War since all my body would be covered up and the suit is quite bulky. I'd also have a scary helmet. Moving around would be another thing entirely.
Everyone is equally bad looking, but Aerith's bangs are just...hilarious. Actually, if he had a good wig, the Vincent Cosplayer wouldnt be THAT bad. He's the best looking of the bunch, IMO. I always thought the Black guy looked funny...especially the lip areas.
