I don't blame you, the concept is rather lost on those overseas. Most people aren't used to widespread YPbPr 480i CRTs. :smile-new:
LOL, It seems that I touched a sensitive issue with the " RGB is overrated thing" I still think that the biggest step is from Composite to S-video, this is where you get rid of pretty much all the weird artifacts. If your setup includes a good tube and a good comb filter S-video will look very very good. Likely quite better than your average slightly aged RGB capable setup. ( As I have observed with my PVM here ) Not saying RGB on a very good optimized setup wont beat S-video, But I think its possibly not worth the hassle for us America's dwellers who do not have easy access to this stuff. (As finely illustrated by the op of this post. ) Now when i say RGB is overrated it is foremost an opinion but more importantly it is a response to all the RGB fanboys that are going like: "OMG S-VIDEO SUCKS I CANNOT ACCEPT ANYTHING BELOW PURE RGB". Ive seen quite a few of those across retrogaming forums. Well good for them if they have the setup of their dreams but they are not a good reference for truth in my opinion.
Ok my friends, as promised I've started up my Sony 38 CRT with 480i component input. Using an RGB to Component converter. And next I've fired my RGB 37 inches Frankenstein. I'm, maybe, making full of myself (the same way a did a few minutes ago in front of my wife). The image on the sony set is gorgeous but it wasn't like that on my old house. It really wasn't like this. Here's the messy result: the other side 180 degrees: Close up pictures of the Sony CRT: Now the pictures of the JVC CRT:
Yeah, but that's now - I was living in the US at the time, and I was specifically looking for a TV with component input (I had a SVO-5800 S-VHS machine with component outputs) - and if there were any on the consumer market, then nobody I asked knew about them. One really annoying thing was that one of the TVs I had (a 32" Sony) had a blanked off port on the rear panel in the place where the equivalent Japanese market model had a D-端子 socket - but they had apparently decided to remove it for the US market...
I personally bought a Framemeister for under $400 new and I still think it's too much. IMO the thing should be half of that, but man, SNES in 1080p is a sight to behold.
I guess the price is a result of the small ammount of production and being sold in Japan only. Plus there's not a big competitor, so they can charge whatever they want. I still don't understand why they don't sell it in places like Europe and USA, even if it was with some sort of production license. I still have 2 CRT's (A 21" Toshiba and a 14" Philips). As soon as they stop working, i'll have to buy one Framemeister. With people getting rid of CRT's for the sake of space and bigger screens, there's a big market for an upscaler.
I don't think SD consoles will look better on an HDTV ever. I currently use an RGB to Component conversor on an 21'' LG. I plan on getting an 29'' Sony when I have the space to use it. Also, I want to get an PVM moniotor too, but they are too expensive here in Brazil.
Have you ever found a 29 inches model here? I saw a few times 20 inches going cheap as R$300. But I still think 20" is too small.
A friend of mine have one. It's almost new, as he only used it a few times. Another friend have one, I think it's 29'' too. This one have a subwoofer attached to the top. I would be happy with any one of these My LG have some noise on darker/gray images when using component video.
It's the kv-38fv15b, it's not the holy grail XBR800. Do you know anything about sony crt models and their differences? I don't mean to be rude, just curious, why did you asked?
I'm looking into getting a bigger CRT TV with components inputs to replace my wimpy 20" model. I mostly use the TV for retro gaming I've checked a few models but I really like the design on yours. that is why I was asking and damn that XBR800 looks like a beast
Look at the first picture on the back. It is a 800XBR of 40 inches that's not working =( It's impossible to repair, I have a little bit of knowledge on hardware and took to 2 other people and none was able to put this beast to work again
The Framemeister is expensive but it's not too much when you concider anything on the same quality level cost almost twice as much! sure, we're talking about broadcast quality kit but that's the only stuff as good or better than a Framemeister. Out of the standard consumer kit the Framemeister is king. Nothing is as good which is why they charge what they do. Don't forget that you guys in the west also have commission added to your price as well which doesn't help. I try to sell them as cheap as possible at 39800 yen. That's basically Japanese retail but I also throw in the shipping for free.
