Very well, so well that's it's all done  Bought a new 1gig SD card on the way home tonight just for the mod. Got everything running in only 10 minutes! I've installed a few emulators (all fantastic), the Gekko loader for import and back ups plus a few apps. Just make sure top switch off the Wii24connection. yakumo PS: What was the point of a mod chip? This soft mode seems to do everything.
Awesome, glad you got everything up and running. The Gamma loader should have a higher game compatibility than the Gekko loader but its good you have both.
Yakumo, is it possible to put the NTSC-J Wii in English language mode? Quite interested in this softmod as I want to bring a Wii home with me, but also want to be able to play some English language games. Having all the menu's in Japanese isn't really a problem, but it's easier if English was also possible (like the DS menu).
Hah, it took me 2 days to figure everything out before I got it working. And modchips are better, because the updates don't do much to disable the chips, whereas we can never update again. You're better off using programs like RegionFrii and force NTSC-U in the loader options. If you try to install foreign firmware on your Wii, there's apperantly a good chance it'll brick your Wii.
There is an option in one of the apps to force the system in to a few different languages with English being on of them but I just left it at default. Like Drew said, it may brick the Wii. I do recommend this softmod though if you don't want to install a mod chip. Sure, you can't update the Wii but why would you want to? Games will run without the new updates thanks to the disc loader and the updates for the Wii from Nintendo here in japan are all familly orientated crap. So no loss at all from what I can see. Come to think of it, you could just deleat the homebrew channel, update then install the homebrew channel again couldn't you? Yakumo
Well there is a app that can change your region for any Wii,you can make it Pal,Ntsc or Ntsc-j if you wanted to but if your not careful you can brick your Wii. Also you can install updates just fine on your Wii as long as its for your region but its wise to see what the update does as Nintendo likes to block certian homebrew.
Now that I have the homebrew channel installed can I still use stuff like the Nintendo Channel, Shopping channel or any Wii ware or games I've downloaded from the shop? Yakumo
sort of. If you have updated your firmware beyond a specific point (october 2008) then you shall be unable to use WAD INSTALLER, the application that installs WADS on your Wii channel menu. This includes emulated titles in the form of Virtual Console and WiiWare. I learned this the hard way when I tried to fire up the installer with StrongBad, a point and click episodic series
The homebrew channel wont affect anything like that mate, it only affects stuff like that if you use the apps change the shop region or the game region like i did using the any region changer app as nintendo locked my jpn wii to the usa store when they did the newest update meaning when i tried to connect it took me to the states. the only way i could get it back to the japan store & for my wii games to work online again was to delete my shop account so i lost everything. But now i wont bother with vc stuff & unless wiiware is amazing i wont bother with that either i'll stick to emulators. Stuff like gecko OS only changes region until you power off so its safe for disks ect.
Thanks for that info Importaku. So at least I know I can still use the Nintendo Channel and play online gamesthat I have already downloaded from WiiWare. By the way, My US Indiana Jones arrived in Osaka yetserday afternoon after only 3 days of ordering it from Amazon US. I expect it to be in my home tonight  Yakumo
hahaha, yep. Every morning I have a can of "CocaCola" Georgia European Bland . Only kept the Lum key chain thought. It's attached to my car key. I have a Detective Conan and some robot one in the car if you want them. I keep meaning to throw them in the bin. So they're yours if you want. Yakumo
I went into the convience stores and took cans of coffee out until I found Lum and then put the others back in. I got 8 lum ones and a few others like Touch.
Modchips existed before softmodding the Wii was possible, I installled a modchip in july this year. I've also compared my Wii with a softmodded Wii, and the main difference is that my Wii, thanks to the modchip, can play backups at 6x Speed, which has a big impact in loading times and during videos, they go faster because the backup loader gamma only works at 3x, but during regular gameplay both Wii work in the exact same way. And also with modchips you can play gamecube backups. PS: Sorry for my crappy english.
