IF there is a Final Fantasy VII Remake (AND THAT IS IF)

It really hasn't aged that well, especially compared to the ones that came before and after it. If you haven't played it yet, waiting for a remake is probably the best move. And you should probably stay away from Advent Children if you haven't seen it yet. The movie looks nice, but has a very shallow story.

Oh I don't think the age hits it all that badly, considering what it achieves on the platform at the time. It arguably packs some replay value if you didn't use a guide. Cross dressing scene was hilarious and still makes me smile when I play it every three years or so, that part where everyone has to bang on the panel at the same time is a pain in the ass still though.

 

eh, she's still smokin' hott.

 

I have 2 copies of this game, and I've tried to play it many times with no success. Every time I do, I get about 5 minutes into it and I say, "This is fucking BORING..." and turn it off.

Personally, I would kill to have a legitimate Final Fantasy VIII remake.

And an "alternative" ver. that you can unlock where we don't have to rely so much on Guardian Forces.

When I first played it, I was absolutely stunned as to how amazing the world was (the cities, the dungeons, etc). And as a kid, I wished I could explore even more.


If they fuck it up, I'm going to be pissed.


On console (PS3, 360) only. I don't like "portable" ports.

 

If they plan to dumb it down then I'll be sticking to the PS1 version. Otherwise a handheld version would really look nice. All things considered, a remake of VIII or IX would be better since they have a more consistent feel.

If they are going to remake anything then they should remake FFVI. That is still the strongest all-around FF title.

 

I'm not ripping on Hardcore Gamers, I'm ripping on "H4rdk0re G4m3rz" - you know the type - the ones who don't really game as much as they posture, and the ones that don't know their gaming other than what's fashionable right now.

Like God of Hardcore, this dude REALLY is hardcore. He knows about games, so I respect him lots.

And it's not that my games are superior (I mean, I play Saints Row, which is commercial as fuck) - it's the fact that we gamers KNOW about gaming, and we don't dismiss anything before trying it first. I tried Halo 3 and Call of Duty - but a "g4m3r!" would not be willing to play La Pucelle Tactics or R-Type Delta, "becos that shit's gay, yo!"

Maybe I did come off as an elitist, though... but my elitism is based on knowledge of what we play, not on the titles or difference of games.

 

That doesn't sound like elitism, it sounds like a way better definition for "hardcore gamer" than "someone who just plays Radiant Silvergun and Street Fighter III and hates on the lesser gamers": someone who likes whatever they like instead of just. I mean, I love fighting games and 2D shooters, but I also love GTA, as an example.

 

I get you, man.

I mean, I really love playing Aero Blasters on my PC Engine on my old TV - or a good round of Demon Attack on the 2600 at 3 A.M. on a Saturday night... But some days it's a Fallout 3 kind of night, or Unreal Tournament III or (drools) Deus Ex HR. I try everything at least once, but yeah, I'm not a Modern Warfare kind of person. I'm a gaming hipster, nowadays, I guess.

I tell my students on introduction day that I'm a gamer. That usually got a good response from them and they'd pay attention to my class if I used a bit of gaming lingo or talked about games in examples... but lately I don't connect much with them that way. They all play the current Halo-like, the latest Call of Duty / FIFA (which is like... Mexican Madden, I guess) - and dismiss all other games as "crap" or "gay" or "old". And, well, that frustrates me a lot.

I did get a few of them hooked on Melty Blood on the PC, so that might be a ray of hope.

These are the targets of games and/or marketing now, not game fans but platform owners, it's product !

 

You know, I've encountered a handful of FF fans who share the sentiment, but I just can't see it. I will admit that FFV has the best gameplay, but despite beating the game, for the life of me I can't name any of the characters or tell you anything about the plot. All I remember is the Gilgamesh fight truth be told.

As for an FFVII remake, I couldn't care less. FF became crap at VII and continued to be pure shit through VIII, IX, and X. Never played XI or XII and just started XIII, so I don't have much of an opinion on those.

Mind you, I was a huge Square fan as a kid, and had been since I had gotten King's Knight as my first non-Mario NES game. So I generally attribute that for my hatred of everything Square did after Chrono Trigger. And to put an emphasis on my earlier Square fandom, I actually bought Secret of Evermore when it came out and played through it. But that was the beginning of the end, and once I played FFVII I was done with them. Stupid characters, stupid plot... just... ugh.

Whoa, slow down there trooper. I'm not insulting FFV, I'm just saying I didn't find it very memorable outside of the gameplay. And pointing out what you remember about FFVII is a bit irrelevant to me as I (obviously) hated the game, so the only reason I remember things from that game was because of how infuriated I was by them.

In my mind, FFVI takes the top spot with FFIV in a very close second (and only in second because the moon stuff was a bit wacky). After that I'd actually give the nod to the original FF on the NES just because of how classic it is, then it would be FFV, then FFIII, and after that it doesn't matter because the rest are steaming piles of shit (or at least, the rest that I have an opinion on).

Also, if memory serves me correctly I've played through FFV at least twice. Once on an emulator way back when and again when it came out on the GBA.

Though, if we were to include the GB games, the ranking may change slightly as I was rather partial to FF Legends II and III. Granted, they aren't really Final Fantasy games, but I didn't know that when I got them as a kid.

 

The final moon sequence always felt rushed to me, like they wanted to just wrap up the game quickly. There could have been so much more done with the Lunarians than just talking with the crystals. Either way, it's not nearly as wacky as the three statues in 6...
