Hmmm... I never found the statues in VI all that wacky. At least, no more wacky than elemental crystals.

Going to the moon in a whale space ship? That's wacky.

I think SE needs to make a 3DS remake of V and VI before they do anything else with VII. I voted for them to make it on next-gen consoles, but after replaying VII a few months ago on PC with several mods installed (Realistic proportions, Better non-midi music, break 9999 limit, etc), I honestly don't think they should remake the game. The story and characters have not aged well at all. AT ALL. It's more tolerable when everything looks like chibi legos, but when the characters look more realistically proportioned (outside of battle), it becomes harder and harder to take the game seriously. It doesn't help when the characters do their stupid cartoony mannerisms, like whenever Barret beats his chest like Donkey Kong, or that weird thing Yuffie does with her arm. You don't even want to imagine how awkward the Wall Market scenes near the beginning are, or how painful it is to watch the melodramatic cutscenes towards the middle and end of the game.

SE is going to piss off a lot of fans regardless of what they do should they decide to remake VII. Too much like the original? "BOO! I wanted a remake, not a port!" Too different from the original? "BOO! You removed what made the game great!" They may decide to make it anyway since we all know it will sell millions, regardless of how good it is. I guess time will tell.

FF VI is my personal favorite as well. I always thought VI was more deserving of a sequel, anime, spinoff, etc than VII. In hindsight, it was probably for the best they chose VII instead of VI since most of the compilation dragged the original game down and added more plot holes than it removed.

I've read the squall is dead theory before, and I honestly doubt that was what the creators intended. I will say that it was an interesting way to make a terrible story seem more interesting. One playthrough of VIII was enough for me, but I might play it again sometime in the future with the theory in mind.
