They have done for ages, and the prices are very reasonable. Much cheaper than they used to sell them for... and I'm talking when I dealt with them back in 1996!

I think you'll find they haven't sold Alpine cards for at least a year. You might want to try their actual site, not some odd looking thing they cobbled up over a year ago ;)

Alpine boards, btw, fairly scarce now. A guy in Kent had a load was selling them on eBay and they'd fetch at least £100 each, usually more. I'm sure I saw one go recently for £200ish.

Er...are you sure about that Retro...Best not existing anymore...because they have a different address and phone number than the one listed on the B&C website...and I recently ordered from Best...well...late 2004.

Oh...and if you check the Best page...it was last updated in Nov 2004...not that long ago.

Yeah, I'm being an idiot! Best and Myatari got into it at the same time, I forget the details now - too tired!

The top of their site says catalogue as of 6-11-04.. .isn't that June where you guys are?

An Alpine for $500 is ok if you REEEALLLY want one. They used to be more, even after Atari closed! You could get one cheaper if you tried, though.

How much do Jaguar Development units go for? My friend in the UK bought one, and said this:

So then, how much is the system described roughly worth, let's say on the Assembler market place?

That's not the only difference. They also have a special boot rom in them. The "Blue Screen Oct '93" is the older boot rom, the more recent are green screen Nov '94. Also, bear in mind, that is just called the "stub" and only cost $99 from Best or B&C (if memory serves). The Alpine is the dev system itself, I have pics on my site of various dev systems as well. Here is the various systems:

    http://www.jaysmith2000.com/Development.html

The 4mb alpine is on the upper left of the 3rd pic. This is what I use for all development/testing. I forgot to add, the RIBBON CABLE from the stub (dev jag) actually connects to the Alpine. The Alpine connects directly to a bi-direction parallel port on the PC or Atari ST, TT030 or Falcon.

I've sold several of these in the past. The 2mb versions I sold for $300 and they sold pretty fast. 4mb versions (only 8 chips on the board instead of 16) sell for considerably more. The last one I sold went for around $700. Good luck finding one for less than $1k these days.

Best Electronics is ran by Bradley Kota and has been around forever. He did move servers in the last couple months so his site was down for a spell. I'm still waiting for him to have a fire sale one of these days, but that doesn't look likely. Still plenty of demand for the old Atari stuff even at some of these high prices.

B&C (Myatari) is ran by Bruce and Kathy. They bought out Atari's final inventory when they shut down the main HQ's in Sunnyvale. Bruce has cases of stuff that he has never opened sitting in his warehouse. It will be a lifetime before he goes through it all. I just bought a couple very cool artwork pieces of AvP for the Jaguar from him. Here's a link to them:

Nope. Hasbro released all rights to Jaguar hardware into open domain after purchasing what was left of Atari for $5M some years ago, therefore you can do pretty well whatever you want with the dev hardware. Buy, sell, trade, throw it at people (then it becomes assault, obviously), etc...

If you're alluding to new ones possibly being manufactured, I'm pretty sure there aren't. Some people have modified theirs, surely, but no, so far as I can tell, these are all either units that were used at development houses and Atari itself, or never used at all to begin with (as I'm assuming Atari didn't do these in a build-on-demand type of situation, thus the surplus).

There's definitely more than just the two revisions, because one of my proto JagCDs has a blue Stub dated sometime in early (April? I forget) '94.

    Hey Stone!

Yeah, there's actually 4 different discovered boot roms. I remember my proto dev CD had a weird one too. Maybe the same as yours. Have you checked my price guide, I have all 4 of them listed in there. If yours is different let me know and I'll add it in the guide. :)

Hi Jay, was wondering when you'd show up :)

Looking at your list (which I hadn't spotted first time around...your site's changed a lot!) I'm pretty certain it's the 4-May-94 one. The other one had the 31-Oct-93 stub in. I'm confident at least one would come to life with a new CD mech (I have one semi-working mech which changes how much they function when I swap it between them) but I've not yet got around to picking up a replacement. They both run through the CD test routines to a certain extent but you need the CD to complete the tests, and I don't really fancy paying $75 for one from B&C for a one-off test. You haven't got one I could borrow sometime, have you? :-D

At the very least all the base units work, so it was a pretty good deal for what I paid for them ;)

Incidentally your price list doesn't include my proto Alpine - it has a very deep green soldermask, no cart shell, is fully populated (the normal ones have spaces for some ICs) and all the non-SMD ICs are socketed. I've only ever seen 2...

Nice to see you again, anyhow :)

I think I do have some extra test disks laying around. :) Yeah, I remember you snagging those for a song. :) Nice score indeed.

I forgot about that proto alpine. You had sent me some pics of it some time back. Send me some details through my site (use the contact form), that way I won't forget to update it. :smt1062

Good to see you around dude, you've been hiding. You should really hit JSII one of these days....
