Doubt it was damaged during shipping. It is inside a box with packing peanuts, inside a case, and then inside a shell. This is a Deluxe Edition, not a board.

The only way for the board to get damaged during shipping is if the box was basically completely crushed. Has nothing to do with my packing methods.

lnx64, do you have a friend with a Genesis? You may want to try it on their's.

SAG: I wasn't criticising you, I was criticising the one Tototek sent him, which jammed into the console. My comment was actually in favour of trying yours rather than automatically assuming it would be of the same quality off the back of one bad experience.

I have edited my previous comment to clarify my statements.

Well as I mentioned, it works just fine, MD or SMS on all my American Genesis consoles, it's only the Japanese MD VA4 mainboard model that has issues with the SMS games, it just won't start them.

But compared to the Tototek one, yours works fine, and your packing was FANTASTIC (Is it me, or does your cartridge smell like fruits?).. Tototek just used an envelope with wire wrap, wasn't a pretty sight.

In this case compared to the last, this cartridge is definitely working.. I just don't understand why the Japanese Mega Drive model 1 VA4 can't run the SMS mode. I even tried unplugging it from the Sega CD and it still wouldn't work.

I even tried a powerbase converter on the console just to see if it WAS a SMS mode problem, but it played the games. So I'm a little confused, something must be preventing it.

Genesis/MegaDrive games however work just fine on the Japanese system, so I know it IS reading and flashing just fine.

Ahh I see. Its all good. Sorry I am a little defensive when it comes to my packaging because I take pride in it. LOL. Yes funny thing to take pride in.

I hate getting packages in the mail that use no packing material and the item just bounces around the box so I try to package everything well.

This video may explain the smell:

Even though the Genesis shells we use are obviously black to start we actually coat them with a few layers of black Vinyl Dye to try to make them "like new" again. The smell will go away eventually.

Ahh ok, I guess I should stop smelling the cartridge then, haha. ;)

Anyway, I was not criticizing your packaging.. Yours was great. I should take a picture of how the tototek one arrived. It was shameful.

Ok I have a oscilloscope hooked up to my Mega Drive that won't play SMS games.

    Where should I start probing?

I wasn't able to get any signals going to the data lines, but when I command the EverDrive to play a SMS game, the Z80's A10 pin goes from dead to showing life, but a steady square wave.

i guess, something wrong with hard rest on your system, if everdrive can't play sms games, but powerbase works fine. check if md games will work if hard reset option was enabled. sms games always uses hard reset, even if option is disabled

Sure thing, I can definitely try that, won't be for another couple hours though.

Damn, I thought you had something.

Tried it, hard reset on MD games works fine.
