(Inter)National NES Day

Discussion in 'Rare and Obscure Gaming' started by Greatsaintlouis, Jun 20, 2005.

  1. I am declaring tomorrow, June 20th, to be International NES Day, in which the only games that can be played are ones on the venerable Nintendo Entertainment System or Famicom. For those of you who live in time zones where it is already the 20th, feel free to use the 21st instead. Post in this thread at the end of the day which games you played, and which, if any, you completed. Remember, only Famicom or NES games can be played. While emulation is acceptable, you won't be in the true holiday spirit unless you're playing on original hardware!

Now We're Playing With Power! :smt023

For the holiday I decided to bust out Castlevania.

For some reason I don't remember the game being this hard. I could beat this shit with my eyes closed when I was 12. Damn I'm getting old.

Alas the unthinkable happened, and on the clocktower level the game froze up. Hopefully it's becasue I was playing it on a Gameaxe and not becasue the cart is getting bad.

how about NES clones that aren't so good. like Maribro brothers or Legend of Xena and/or kid bicris

  6. *Hacked game/clones don't count. We want to celebrate the glorious heritage of the NES/Famicom, and I doubt you could readily get people to agree that things like "Mario 14: Grand-dad" are part of the glorious heritage. ;) That being said, pirate carts are alright if they contain an original, unmodified game, or if they are a conversion of a disk-only game, such as Doki Doki Panic! or SMB2.

*Remakes count if the game has not been altered significantly in any fashion. Things like the Famicom/NES Classic line on the GBA, for example, are acceptable (yes, I know they have a save option, but that doesn't screw with the game too much), but overhauls such as the Super Mario All-Stars on SNES, Final Fantasy Origins/Dawn Of Souls on PSX/GBA respectively, River City Ransom EX on GBA, or Super Mario Advance 1 and 4 don't count. As far as the unmodified ones go, they ARE acceptable, but remember that we're celebrating the NES/Famicom, so if you can, play the original system!

*The 20th Anniversary of the Famicom was 2 years ago (though we might be getting close to the NES' - I can't remember) but I'm mainly doing this because A) my NES hasn't gotten any love in a few months and B) everyone deserves a chance to revel in its 8-bit glory once more, as it can be easily forgotten in the heaps of other systems we invariably own. :-D

And yes, the original Castlevania still is a bitch. Just picked up the NES Classic on GBA the other day, and I can't for the life of me beat Death. I think my skills have definately atrophied from age 12. :(

Metal Gear 2? You mean Snake's Revenge? Yeah! I love that game. I've probably completed it about what, 4, 5 times now? Seriously awesome. I don't understand why it gets slated so much. The gameplay is good, and the aesthetics are typical Konami quality.

Damn, Im gonna have to do this today, its already the 21st in France.

I went back and got quite far in Gun-Dec, which for those of you in the West is Vice: Project Doom. If you can't get the cart at short notice (I've seen it very cheap actually, both in Japan and on USA websites), I'd emulate it. Preferably on the DC. Wonderful platformer with driving and shooting bits.

Finally, to finish off, Im going to go back to Huang Di and try and complete it again. Emulation only I'm afraid, since it was a Chinese original game, and I have never seen an original cartridge. But I can safely say, its probably the best unlicensed game on the system. So, if you've never played it, get "Huang Di", you'll thank me for it. On the other hand, if you actually have an original cartridge of it, post some pics, and then PM me! ;)

Tbh though, my Famicom gets regular usage, so this is just a normal day for me. And yeah, I am blatantly biased towards it.

    EDIT:
Whatever you do, do NOT play the Japanese version of Maniac Mansion. It is tangible proof that even the Japanese can get localisations HORRIBLY wrong. They practically remade the whole damn thing. >_<

I have played "VICE: Project Doom", "Super Mario 3", "Akumajo Densetsu" (on the PC so I could get the good sound), "Shatterhand", and ... pretty much that's it.
    I'll play more today, though.

I can't stand the Famicom. On the other hand, there was a Galaga port, right? :)

Any good shooters on the Famicom? I may reconsider if there's more to it than Galaga...

    Edit: Hah, I'm a day late :).

The end guy in level 3 keeps killing me.

I'll fix that today or tomorrow.
No worry - every day is NES day

  15. The NES/Famicom has an awesome port of 1943 if you can get your hands on it. Other than that there's Star Soldier, Xevious, Life Force, Gradius, Gunsmoke (I consider it a shooter), MagMax - and those are all just off the top of my head! It's a great system for shooters - sure, they aren't as close to the arcade port as maybe the Genesis or PC Engine versions were, but there's still a ton of them.

There's this really cool Konami Japan-only Shooter that also has very good sound and great graphics, that Yakumo covered on the last or next-to-last Retro Core.... what was that one called? Anyway, played it on the PC and it's pretty cool.

Crisis Force is an absoluitely AMAZING Konami shooter for the system. Smooth controls, amazing paralx scrolling graphics, and some thumb blistering shooter action.

    I quite like it anyway.

I played an old favorite of mine, Megaman.

  19. I gave Castlevania III a shot, nearly made it through Super Mario Bros (damn the lack of mushrooms in 8-4 and the ultra cheap, near impassable Bowser at the end) and got extremely frustrated at the insanity of Marble Madness. :-D Nosiree, they sure don't make them like they used to anymore.
