We may all be losing our edge as players...? Are we becoming pussified by today's easy games? God, we HAVE to practice. Let's make this NES month! Edit. And yeah, the great shooter I was talking about is Crisis Force. Impressive, for sure.
Its really depressing to find out a game that was easy when you were younger, is harder now. Me and my brother could never beat Contra, but we still loved it. BTW, I forgot, my bro has all the NES games, and he moved away. I have a good excuse to emulate, since the actual carts are 300 miles away. EDIT:Has anyone ever beat Ghosts and Goblins?
Mario 1 is sort of easy, compared to 2 and 3. When I was younger, I could never beat the last Bowser air force level in Mario 3 (Jumping those damn things was almost impossible...!). One of the best games, ever if you ask me. Zelda 1 is great, too. I just dont like how you dont get many clues for the 8th dungeon on burning the tree. It Feckin took me forever to find that out!
Marios 2 and 3 never held such a challenge for me as the first SMB did. I can still breeze through Mario 3 in somewhere along 25 minutes (Warp Whistles, of course) and even SMB2/USA isn't that bad, but the whole World 8 stretch in SMB is just a killer, even coming in with around 10 lives. But yes, I'd agree Mario 3 is one of the best games ever - I was so excited when it was released as Super Mario Advance 4. Playing that on the go is pure bliss. And yeah, the first Zelda is awesome too, though there was many a time where you'd be running around without a clue in the world where to go next because you forgot to talk to some old crone in a cave. I've not played Ghosts 'N Goblins, but I've got Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts on the GBA (port of the SNES classic) and all I have to say is that whoever designed those games must have had a burning hatred for all humanity, as that's the most ridiculously difficult thing I've ever played.
I used to be able to reach the twin golden tigers in Ninja gaiden on the Famicom. My dodgy Hon-Kong hack though didn't have any projectile firing, meaning I did the whole thing without firing shurikens. An impressive feat back then. Now I can barely get past the first stage without dying.
I feel everyone's pain. I could breeze through any of the Super Mario games, I could easily finish games like Shatterhand, Mega Man 2, and, of course, the easy as hell disney ones, like Rescue Rangers, TaleSpin and Darkwing Duck. Now I can't get through level one in Darkwing... and Shatterhand... damn, it's so hard. After the selection screen, I'm pretty much dead. Mega Man 2 I have memorised it, so I can finish it after about an hour of swearing. I have a friend that can go through it in about 20 minutes, though. He even bought that T-Shirt that says "I beat the 8 Robot Masters" My current plan, which had been even before GSL's great idea, is to play through Super Mario 3 without skipping any levels. Not just worlds. Levels. Meaning, to completely play everything available. I was planning a little get-together with my geek friends and maybe we could play a 2-player game rotating the controllers - four or five of us. But I still want to play through it without skipping anything, myself. And today, I have a free morning... This gives me some sort of an idea!
I played some Galaga last night (through an emulator - I don't have a NES), and it was fairly fun. I'm going to check out some of the shooters mentioned, though. I was going to play my newly bought R-Type Final, but then I remembered I hate horizontal shooters . This gives me something to do tonight...
R-Type Final rocks brutally. I have it, but I no longer have a PS2, so I can't do much with the DVD. I envy you, dude, so much. It's really great. And for NES shooters... There's also Zanac - and the PSX remake is also VERY good. Did I spell Zanac or Xanac or whatever correctly? I Mean the NES/PSX Shooter, not the medication.
I think it's Zanac... And Taemos, you MUST play R-Type Final, it is an amazing game that should hopefully restore your faith in humanity (or at least horizontal shooters.) :-D Playing all the way through SMB3 is definately possible; I remember doing it a few times back in my youth, and even a couple of times on the GBA. I'd say out of all the Marios, 3 is probably the easiest to do a full playthrough of, followed by SMB USA. Super Mario Bros. is just the devil, though.
I'm with you on that one, GSL. On both counts, actually. R-Type Final is so really great, it's one of the ones I miss the most out of not having a PS2. It's hella fun. I remember going through SMB2 (usa) without skipping anything, several times. SMB3, I remember taking many different routes to finish... and I once did go through it complete with my sister. I, however, was not able to finish SMB until I was like 13. For the record, my "free morning" turned into no game time for Xerdo. And today is not bound to be different, unfortunately. There's always the weekend.
damn... I totally missed this well.. I did SNES the 18th I hope that could make up for it a little in other case I have to play NES all next week think I start with Rygar cuz I've never managed to kill the last boss.. he is impossible to beat! and maybe some Robo Warrioir (bomber king in the u.s.)
Rygar, ouch. That's one of the most horrifying memories I have of growing up with the NES - that game got HARD in the later levels.
Me and a friend beat every single mario game for NES, and SMW for SNES, totally. Every stage, secret, everything. Thats what we did in Cisco Networking all year, played mario.
Couple of years ago, my (now) ex and I spent a whole week in my room finishing SMW world by world and getting all the stars. Yeah, that's what a 22 year old guy and a 20 year old girl do while alone in his room, with nobody in the house, at night. Come to think of it... Boy, did that make me feel nostalgic... Time to dust off that Snes.
Yeah, but we hadn't played in a while - and we were both quite rusty. We played like two to three hours a night.
