I would hardly count 4chan as a milestone, I don't even know what it is. Not that that really means something, but it doesn't appear to be popular outside of the US.

I have no idea when I first used the internet. I would guess probably like 96 or 97. At first I just used it to find cheat codes for video games. Like GameShark codes. But it wasn't long till I found out about emulation and online games like StarCraft. These days though I can't believe we tolerated those shitty speeds, dialing in, etc. At one point we had 2 phone lines so one was available for the internet 24/7.

To me though it seems like a lifetime ago. Dialing in, downloading at what, 4kb a second if you were lucky. All that bullshit. I even remember playing WarCraft 2 (DOS) over the phone line with my friend who was using the MAC version.

Yeah we had two landlines until late 2000 for the same reason...

Then we got an awesome DSL service of 256K!!:eek:h::eek:h::lol:

At the time the difference was amazing, a real quatum leap. Today even 1Mbps sounds slow to me...

I dont know why but from 1996 to 2001 it was like a revolution or something, even when there wasnt actually that much around, but the last 6 years is like if nothing had happened, while in fact theres been a lot of stuff around lately.

    Maybe is just me...

Damn, I STILL HAVE 256K!! You can bet I'm really pissed off, but adding the fact that I'm paying about 20USD/month for it and you have to pay more than 50 bucks for a 1Mbps connection, I'm really fucked up. This country sucks, as soon as I finish college I'm getting the hell outta here.

Geeze I remember all this sh*t....so much has changed since the early days...anyone remember kermit terminal emulation?

I still have two VAX computers at home.....the best OS ever....shame it became commerically unviable....'set user/priv=cmkrnl' or 'set user/priv=readall'...

I remember working in Digital manufacturing facility when Compaq (who were Houston based) took it over....the screensavers had

    "Houston.......we have a problem"

I remember I wrote a DCL shell for Windows....that was a totally dumb ass thing to do.......

That sucks dude, but where are you going then? Spain? I hate to be the guy who has to tell you this but when I was there people had the same complaints about broadband in their country. Apparently they have the worst ISP companies in the continent.

And believe me, every country looks awesome until you are living there...(well except really fuck up places like Africa, but thats another case).

Ah yes, the computers with orthogonal instructions, I remember those...

BTW which models do you have?

In a matter of fact, I'm thinking about going to USA for some years to make some advanced studies (I was born in NYC, so I don't need a Visa or green card) and do whatever I'm unable to do here (make a good console collection, for example), but I wouldn't like to stay forever, I'd be back after I finish my studies, I think.
BTW, the "I hate this country" feeling is common here, don't be surprised

Yeah I know, there was a bunch of south americans from different countries in spain, and they all agreed that no matter you where in chile, argentina or peru, life was a bitch back there...

Anyways, good luck getting your console collection back to your country: I heard customs down there are the worst in the world.

My first exposure was around 95 but I didn't really stary getting into it until 97 or so. Before the it was a local BBS. What I remember most was what a pain it was to find what you were looking for without a decent search engine.

    You can bet it :banghead:

I just entered my internet provider's website and I found out that for the end of this year my bandwidth will be upgraded to 1 Mbit at least (maybe 2 Mbit or more). That's really good for me, 256K in these times is an insult (and more when cellphones have a 7.2 Mbit internet connection here). Damn, I just don't understand how if both cellphone and internet services are managed by the same company, we have great mobile services (with more than 90% of people with cellphone, it's predicted for the end of '08 that we'll be the 1st country with 100% of the population with mobile phone) but internet services are damn slow (being 2 Mbit the best available for more than USD200) and really unstable (my connection falls down at least twice a day).

7 MBs in cellphones? are you guys using 3G? or UMTS?

In any case, why dont you use your cellphone as a modem then?

One company provides 3G services while the rival works with UTMS. Anyway, this kind of phones are still too expensive for me...

1995, with Prodigy. Crazy that it's only been around a decade, and everything has changed so much.

Remember back then before it was mainstream, you could just go to different homepages and grab music right there, nobody noticed or cared. Then Napster came around, and I remember by father telling me to "Get it all now before they make it illegal." (My father is a police officer btw.)

He also told me to make a site "Before they start charging too much." Thankfully that's one prediction that hasn't come true.

4chan is a imageboard where you do not need a account to post, and has different boards for different people. The thing about 4chan is that it is sort of a western version of the Futaba Channel, but being based more on Anime/Video Games/Porn. Its not a milestone per-se, and the concept has been around since the beginning of the net, but the imageboard such as 2chan has gained quite a following in Japan.

Granted, my definition of milestone is any website that can launch a series of smaller versions of itself with a major purpose. Myspace wasn't the first gathering site, but it created a bunch of knockoffs and similar meeting sites. Google video was before youtube (to my knowledge), but the youtube format has grown into a series of other sites. wikipedia launch a series of smaller wikis on certain subjects deemed too unimportant to tell in detail on Wikipedia. 2chan was the influence for 4chan, which created similar imageboards in the west (many of them dead now, though...)
