So, against all odds (there were rumors it was vaporware) the iPhone was shown today in the Macworld.

What can I say? I'm just speechless: this thing has a 160dpi screen and almost everything a Mac does. It even runs on OSX, has Safari, iPhoto, and obviously, iPod.

I'm no apple fan, but this is teh end for any other smartphones out there, specially Treo (which I hate, becos is a overpriced brick of shit and Palm has the worst customer support ever).

There's no price yet, and is only going on cingular for now.

The only way I could see this to fail is that is either too expensive (and I mean, a LOT, like $800 or more) or that apple stay on cingular instead of moving into other carriers.

Anyways, another damn phone to buy.................too bad my company doesnt cover highend models:crying:

EDIT: price is $199 and up, no data on storage yet.

    It's gonna be 500 dollar w/ a 2 year contract with 4(or 6, not sure) GB HDD, and 600 w/ a 2 year contract with 8GB. A bit pricey but I mean:

    It runs OS X
It has a innovative way to control it
It has built in Wifi, and with Safari is able to show you everything OS X Safari can show you
    It's a widescreen 4/8 GB iPod
    It runs OS X

I'm loving it, although I find it pricey. But not pricey for what you get, pricey because I won't spend 500 dollars on a phone seeing as I won't use it's functions except for calling.

I dont give a rats ass what OS it runs. In fact when i use a phone i dont even want to know what OS it runs.

Are there pics anywhere that show the calendar functions etc? Or is this purely an ipod-like multimedia centered thing?

FWIW, I believe the OSX is kind of stripped down embedded version. However, I have to say that this is one of the coolest gadgets I've ever seen. This looks to me alot like a handheld computer as opposed to a phone, kind of a Newton 2.0. I've never been interested in using a webbrowser or email from a phone before because a.) it's pricey b.) it sucks. This gadget seems to overcome those limitations by using wifi and a touchable very high rez screen.

Apple has me sold. I must have one.

I am so buying one of these...next march (08) when my contract runs out. I think that people already having contracts is going to be the main problem with this, and it'll be a gradual takeover, unlike the iPod where one christmas everyone comes back to college with one...

As far as I know, you can sign a new contract at any time, no penalty. At least thats what the guy told me at the cingular store when I was talking to him about getting a new phone.

Anyone know of when its launching, and what it is compatible with software wise?

Unless I missed something, it hasn't been approved by the FCC yet so I think anything right now is pretty much speculation.

You mean what software can run on it? It looks to be mostly just widgets. I'm sure that they're made in about the same way that the current widgets are made.

 I'm not sure how it could be any more Apple-ly. In fact if I'd seen this phone made by someone else, I would say they would have a lawsuit on their hands.

to me, thats too big for a phone :(

I was expecting more of perhaps a clamshell style device like a minature ds lite

edit: its also quite expensive at 499 and 599 for a 4g and 8g model

Agreed. Thats why its also a touch screen internet capable Ipod.

I understand why not everybody would want one (in fact pretty soon you'll hear a slew of "but why won't it do X?" like pretty much every apple product). But this thing is perferct for me. I can scrap my laptop (internet and email access), cell phone, and mp3 player and just take this to class with me. With google maps, it sure makes it alot easier to navigate the city instead of walking down the street holding a laptop.

Sounds about right to me (i.e. premium price for an Apple product that someone else could make for half the price). I remember when motorola introduced the Razr, without a contract your were looking at somewhere around 5-600 for the phone. I haven't looked at smart phones for a while, but it seemed to me like they ran between 3-800. Again, I don't doubt that its expensive, but for what it does it seems reasonable to me.

I'd wait on some real-life battery usage specs :) All smartphones nowadays suck battery-wise. Nice features but whats the use if the battery can't even cope with a few hours of actually usingthe thing? This won't be any different i think.

These are all the specs available at the time

    Screen size: 3.5 inches
Screen resolution: 320 by 480 at 160 ppi
    Input method: Multi-touch
    Operating system: OS X
    Storage: 4GB or 8GB
    GSM: Quad-band (MHz: 850, 900, 1800, 1900)
    Wireless data: Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) + EDGE + Bluetooth 2.0
    Camera: 2.0 megapixels
Battery: Up to 5 hours Talk / Video / Browsing, Up to 16 hours Audio playback
    Dimensions: 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 inches
    Weight: 4.8 ounces / 135 grams

I'm having trouble finding the exact price, but on the ther hand a highend Blackberry goes for the same or even more and looks archaic against the iphone.

Apparantly there's still no real price from apple or cingular, but I can bet is not going to be cheap.

A laptop? dude, have you heard about the paper-based location device? its been around for a while...

Theres also the helio drift phone which has google maps, GPS and a buddy locator (if you know people who has that phone too).

Back to the iphone, this is a smart move for apple since they're able to expand their gadget userbase beyond the ipod and with a major company as backup.

If this works then the next big thing will be either a Zune phone or a console-phone from nintendo or maybe even sony.

    That or yakumo's DC phone:nod:

Depending on my luck on ebay, one could easily score 10 j680's

Second thought, I'd just rather pay the price for a jornada and have much more applications than the iphone :)
