Does anybody else feel that playing games on an iPod Touch / iPhone is really not all that great? I don't get why the hype over some games on the system really. My big issues so far have been (with most of the games) 1) It plays like a cheap cell phone games 2) Horible or boring controlls (racing games all fit this one) 3) Good/Decent game yet hard/frustrating/anoying to play since my fingers cover over everything going on To top it all off, the app store it self is pretty bad/not good enough (due to all the bs crap apps/games). If you don't really know what you are looking for, you're probably not going to find anything decent. Sure the games are well priced and cheap but I personaly don't feel like blowing $1-$5 here and there for games I won't really come back and play. I think one of the biggest issues that bother me so much is my 3rd issue. It really sucks the device wont allow you to use a stylus (even a fat ds one). One of the only games I really like on the device (a bridge building game with monkeys) gets frustrating to play since I either have my fingers covering over the entire screen or I use the offset input but that just makes things more confusing with it sometimes trying to build crap when I want to scroll or destroying stuff when i'm trying to build on another part. It just makes the whole experience even more frustrating. It's sad to say but I think i'm enjoying the overpriced games on DSi (recently got one) far more then the stuff on iPhone. Anybody agree or disagree? I'm just currious to see others opinions on this.
Most iphone game are crap. Megaman II is the worst game I've played on mi ipod touch, it doesn't feel like Megaman. Best game so far? Wolfenstein. The controls feels great. But i agree with you 100% on your 3rd issue
THANK YOU! Finally someone with some common sense! I always felt the iphone was more "Flash" than anything else. It's like, "do you want to be in the 'it' group, or do you want to be in the 'not it' group. Because thats what we sell. We sell 'it' factor!"
I haven't played with the Iphone so I don't know how the gameplay value is, but I don't like the touch control it has to it, also I've seen some games where you have to tilt the Iphone a certain, Don't like that at all.
It depends on the genre, it works actually really well for shooters. aka - rRootaga, Skyforce And of course for Tower Defense games, I gotta say I am really addicted to TD right now. And that does work really well with the touch controls. I am surprised we have not seen any RPG or more SRPG for it, that is surely the genre touch controls are made for. Personally I hate the touch screen buttons, and they only work very rarely, but it ought to get better. Idracula does a fairly good job. I would just add that GeoDefense is one of the best games I have played this year. Anyone with an Iphone should check it out. It is short but only 59p and it is spot on and to be honest it simply would not be as good without the touch controls.
You of course get a cheaper phone and a real games console like the Nintendo DS or PSP, hours more fun...
I own both a DS & PSP. =) I like my PSP but sadly it could use some more puzzle games. I hoped the iPhone would fill that void nicely but it just is not fun at all. So its new replacement is my just recently purchased DSi. So far i'm loving the stuff on DSiware. =)
Thing is: you HAVE to carry a phone these days, so why not combine it with some gaming , not necessarily your main gaming. Also from the time you start a game to actual gaming is generally much faster than any other device. I was skeptical at first, and yes most games are shit. But I follow some good blogs that let me know what is out there. I would not knock it. There is no reason why so many games on the DS can't be on the iphone for example. My conclusion: I am up for ALL gaming. I have no problems with something being popular. And I honestly think there is "some" evidence for it being a viable platform for games. But they need to find out what games actually work on the device, Try on-rail shooters and TD before you condemn it all.
This is a mockup but some guys at dcemu.co.uk have actually made a slimmer more appealing retro version and are looking to produce it. I can't find the link so here's a pic of the nasty version: http://www.shacknews.com/screenshots.x?gallery=10673#img125484 Seems like it could be the answer to the iphone game problem.
Gaming on the iphone can be nice but there are few games that implement controls well. My personal Fav right now is TapTap revenge 2, a great music game simmilair to say rockband/guitar hero and you can get 100's of free songs for it. There are also some great puzzle games like bejeweled and super monkey ball is also a blast. So i wouldn't say it's all bad, just that the majority of games are poorly made which makes it look like gaming on the iphone is ass
I pretty much agree with that. The big advantage of playing games on an ipod/iphone at work/school/whatever is that you don't look like a total geek, like when you take a DS or PSP with you.
Unbelievably. Yeah the "phone" part is pretty much the same as anything, but if you pick your apps, they can be great. The built in GPS has saved me on more than a few occasions... way more than it has failed on (which is wabout twice). Note that I live in a "walking city" and a very poorly layed out one at that. The POP3 mail application is 100x better than anything I've seen on a Japanese phone (and I've had some nice ones). Other than that for practicality, I got a rockin' J-E/E-J dictionary (Free), and SSH client (even though it only works on WiFi) and all kinds of other shit. The only let down I've had recently was I couldn't read an open office document. For "fun" I just got a Youtube video downloader which cost a whole dollar.
They look pretty handy because of the apps. So does the google phone (G1 or something?) I dunno which one would be more useful though. I might be getting a cell phone (again) sometime and they look pretty useful, like ACTUALLY useful, but then again it's not like I ever do anything too terribly interesting. My old Razr worked pretty well for me, lol.
Only way I would seriously consider the iPhone is if they added buttons and a D-Pad in the next version. Using the touch screen on the DS is bad enough half the time.
