If only more people cared. Dreamcast is slowly becoming more and more a niche market. Ill be happy if I could just stream games over my LAN. It sort of works using the new Dreamshell RC-1 but slower speeds then the SD adapter itself. He talks of improving it more once the SD module is more optimized so my hopes are high for the distant future if he stays interested.

Lets add a nuclear fusion reactor so if you want to portabilize it it'll last forever!

Thorium molted salt would be safer in the event you drop the console on the floor. Just saying...

A Chaos Fusion Drive would be the most stable...

Obviously the most reasonable add-on would be a frickin' laser beam attached to its lid! :love-struck: No question it would rejuvenate the DC scene, bring in tons of talented homebrew developers, quite possibly even get Sega out of its 10 year funk. If that weren't motivation enough for an opto engineer, how about the prospect of earning.... ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS!

Hang on then..... Going on the basis of reverse engineering, couldn't we send a Dreamcast laser assembly off to a replication factory? That's possible isn't it?

a Kickstarter for saving your Dreamcast that doesn't read discs sounds very attractive to me ;)

It is from the Austin Powers the movie series. It is a quote Dr. Evil used frequently. It was meant to be a joke but I guess nit all of us have seen those movies. Do yourself a favor go get the trilogy and laugh your arse off.

As for sending off a GD-ROM drive for replication we have already modified normal PC CD-ROM drives in a Dreamcast and are fully functional. Not the easiest task but can be done at home with patience. We can trick normal PC drives into dumping Dreamcast disc by faking the TOC as they are just CD's with the pits closer together to fit the data tighly on the disc. Much like 900mb CDR's. So a kickstarter to make replacement drives would be a waste of cash as anyone could make these drives and sell them if they should ever see any profit in this. One of my systems uses a PC drive and I must say it is remarkable how well it works as the read speed is higher then a normal drive so it allows me to dump disc faster over a LAN using httpd-ack. I get 2mbps where as a stock drive the most I can get out of the 12x laser is 1.3mbps.

Hold the phone! It's possible to put a different drive in a Dreamcast with a broken GD Drive? Can you shed any more light on this? I have a couple of them that I'd like to get back into circulation !

I don't have a phone line and I use dial up modem to play online all the time. The modem supports more games then the BBA does and ever will. There were only maybe 10 games the officially supported the BBA adapter. Google TLS3 and Netopia to see how to network your modem to your router. I paid under $100 for mine shipped you just have to look around and wait for deals. I just setup ebay filters to tell me when a Netopia 2020 and a TLS were available under $50 each. I got the TLS2 for $50 shipped and my Netopia 2020 for $27 shipped as it didn't have a PSU. Luckily I had one compatible. Now this is the only way I play online as it supports games like Starlancer, 4x4 EVO (with all the PC mods as well) Maximum Pool and PSO as well as Quake III and Sega Swirl in it's many variants. The BBA only supports PSO and Quake III. They are working on more and more servers all the time. There is even one in development for Virtual On with support for the 5.60 customization plus disc to use all the updates outside of the "test" arenas and in the actual game.

As for the PC CD-ROM mod I will have to find the guide as the site it used to be on is now gone but I do know the author of the guide and I will ask him if he still has the English version as he did a guide in Spanish and English. Once I get the info I will get back to you. Till then I have his youtube video's of it working. He even proves it runs GD-ROM's in the second video. He used the Utopia disc as the system was Japanese while the GD-ROM was NTSC-U so it was only to boot the import. It was done by a guy named CoCo some in the DC scene might recall, kinda a pr*ck mod at SOR when it was around with a huge ego problem but hopefully he cares enough about the DC scene to share this info again.

Here is the old guide but as you can see the pics have been long since pulled, it is where I got the youtube links from. There are others but not done nearly as well.

Here is someone using the Netopia/TLS setup to go online with their DC's stock modem as well.

Here is a pic pf what I use to go online with my modem.

Never tested by me or anyone else with the setup so you would be a first and I told you the author can be a little pr*ck at times. His idea of being funny as he refuses to repost the pics for that guide. Said if I could no decipher that from reading them I didn't need to attempt the mod anyhow.

No it isn't right around $20 USD shipped just takes a little patience to get it right but once you do it reads at 16x over the GD-ROM's stock 12x so it is actually better then the original and they are mass produced already. This is a mod I would say 95% of the community could od if they simply sat down took their time and had some patience. And yea he is a super guy sent me a warning with no reason why, when I asked about it on SOR he banned me right away. He has an e-penis problem.

alot of people take roles like that to have power over others to satisfy their megalomania and other various mental issues. rather than taking the roles on to help the communities but that happens across the board in every walk of life / situation.

im thinking of giving it a go as i've got 2 dc's here and possibly a 3rd coming that i'd love to get working again. this could get a lot of DC's back on the market which is always a good thing in my book.

I see... DC scene is also like the internetss. :suspicion: now I cant find my soldering iron, im afraid it at my parents home.
But on topic, so not many games support the bba? only rly usefull for homebrewwing and browsing and stuff?
I hope for a GDrom emuboard, maybe some addod with a dvdrom and then one can read legal backups from maybe blueray drive :D
to much closed projects, opensource or community projects sounds more awesome... but well, just like other scenes, most people have idea but not the skills/time/money/know-how. :very_drunk: I have a beer, and no time atm.. :(
