Is it possible to netboot Naomi without a netkey/zeropic?

I have read on the internet that in order to netboot a game you need one of those null/zero/netboot pic chips. Can a game be netbooted if you use the original pic chip for it and then just sent the bin with transfergame.exe?

I tried doing just this with Virtua Fighter 4 Final Tuned with my vf4ft pic chip in but keep getting Error 33 after memory check which I am told means the system doesn't like the pic.

The gdrom pics are different from netboot pics and can't be used interchangeably. You can use the script referenced above but you'll need to keep the program running as long as you are playing the game. Otherwise you need a netboot pic

 

I use the python script and don't need to keep the program running. But is better to just get the zero key and use the transfer.exe is easier and problem free. I also need to buy a zero pic.
Forgot that you can boot atomiswave modified bins without the pic.

 

Just wondering, why does the game need the program to run? Does it look for the pic and if it doesn't find it, it makes the screen go black and the program gives it what it needs?

 

If you dont have the security pic for the games the program also load the key to make the game boot. But only with the python script. If you use the sega transfer.exe it does not load the key so it will give you the problem.

 

Any clue what exactly the python script does to get past the problem?

 

You have to install Python 2.7 and PyCrypto 2.1 to your system.
use the above script as follows

Python naomi_boot.py gamename.bin
on the command prompt (cmd.exe)

I have that setup and it runs just fine but I was looking for a solution that does not require the program/computer to stay on.

From what I understand having a network key/zeropic takes that requirement away and you can have the program closed and still have the game play. I will have to find one of those.

I have a netdimm with no security chip at all. My Naomi 2 would doesn't know it's there at all, unless I put in my friend's null security chip.

Does the netdimm just need ANY security chip in it to work with python netboot? If so, would a blank chip work?

If you use the pyforce tools you don't need a zero pic, but if you are going to use the transfer.exe then yes you need the pic.
If you need one zero pic Bad_ad84 sells them for a good price.

To boot atomiswave hacked games you dont need the pic.

 

An empty security pic won't make a difference. The pic needs to be programmed. The python script seems to reset a timer.
If it timeouts otherwise, it does a polling to see if a security chip is present. This was probably to prevent removal of the chip once the game had started. Mame seems to contain code of a security pic that was dumped and dissasembled. It seems to work, except on chihiro 3 hardware.
