Reminds me a lot of our local bus market. In a bus that has ~10 seats, you will usually have 50 people stacked on each other (sometimes literally...)

Still, it tends to be worse in countries with lax laws regarding transportation (where you can stack people on roofs etc.)

That aside, watching that, several things come to mind. What if panic erupts? What if someone requires immediate medical attention? It's very dumb of these people to travel like that (I'd rather miss my train than risk my life/health)

See, I would've gone to Japan and not a single one of you guys living over there would've warned me or anyone else. Shame on you all!

Thanks for saving my life in advance, PrOfUnD Darkness. :eek:h:

Some of us work at home. I got on a rush hour train last week to go to a poker game. Realized it was the first crowded train I had been on in a few years.

When I see a bus like that the first thing that comes to my mind is "Fuck it! I'll get the next one". The second thing that comes to mind is "What a bunch of soft sods they all are on that bus "

Well, i won't complain about French Metros anymore!

take it everyday, i thought it was overcrowded. ..

    well that's really worse.

If i go to japan (maybe 15 days in a year so...) and sees that... well..

    "I'll take the next one"

You have to remember that the last train is the LAST train.

Being shoved allows you to violate the Japanese sense of personal space without suffering embarassment. After all, the shoveris doing his job, so it's not your fault you're face to face with a young woman.

Or that the corner of someone's briefcase is stabbing you in the balls.

Last trains are rarely this crowded though... not even in December. Everyone goes home at different times... they all go in at the same time though.

Wow, I've got on packed Underground trains in London and Subway trains in New York where you have to stand in the doorway, but that is just crazy!

That last one was a proper train, not a subway? How the hell do you get out at your stop?! Do you have to go through that every time? And there can't be a guard checking tickets, either!

Depends on the station. Lots of the more crowded trains (Odakyuu, Inokashira, etc.) are commuter trains. Often the doors open, and nobody gets out. If someone does have to get out, you just say excuse me and barrel over them.

I experience this every monday wednesday and friday. The 9pm train from Seoul to Bucheon is always like this but we don't have personal 'shovers'.

Actually, public transport is the fastest way to get around Tokyo.

In Kyoto the fastest is by bicycle. ;p

You'd think there would be an obvious solution... You know, like adding extra carraiges to the train... Doh.

Depending on the time of day, it is usually the slowest. Unless it's a weekend, or there's construction, taxi wins hands down. In such a case, a bicycle is generally faster. Trains are only good when you have to go very long distances.
