This looked as a best place to ask this, but I am interested, if there is an Area 51 of proto/beta communities? You know, the ones where you need a VERY special invitation to join, may it be super secret irc channels, forums etc. and maybe even sharing some unbelievable stuff on their secret ftp servers.

Ok, I wrote it as something unbelievable to give this thread some kind of urban legend feel, but does anyone knows any myths, rumors about this kind of thing, which you've heard from anyone? Or is it as much of a myth as real snuff videos?

Tor and the underweb? You'd basically find anything there.

Yeah, I also meant underweb. It's not that I want to find some magical stuff in underweb or even links of them, but I am just asking if there are any urban legends about secret stuff on underwebs, or smth. that has been talked about and never proven.

I'm aware of a few but it's not like they sit around sharing 100% of everything they have. Pictures, videos, etc of stuff that is either ridiculously rare and there stands a chance they'd be tracked down and robbed or the kind of stuff that might get you prosecuted if news of your ownership of the item got out.

Even the Freemasons aren't as screwy as people make them out to be.

Even if one existed, would anyone actually reply to your post to confirm it? I doubt that.

I also doubt it, but I am not searching for specific links, secret material etc. I just wanted to ask for some stories or rumors, or how beta/proto things work in underweb circles . Nothing more.

The first rule of the super secret beta community is: you do not talk about the super secret beta community.

The second rule of the super secret beta community is: no smoking.

some old mail-trade-communities are known.(before dsl and such) those communities are older than twenty years and all members are trustworthy.

Also, I am not asking for proven facts, I consider ''hearsay'' tidbits about this kind of thing interesting.

You just broke rule number 1 and rule number two is bullshit. I'm always arguing with super underground l33t moderator when we get together to converse and swap our copies of URA Zelda, Resident Evil, and 12 Tales.

I remember hearing about there being one for Japanese proto collectors, pretty certain I read about it here in fact. Not that anyone gave links or anything, but I specifically remember someone saying one exists. Could have been Kevin? I've used all my resources and could never find anything myself, though I merely used Google so it's likely beyond that reach.

Sometimes protos might be shared privately on a forums too, it's not only limited to a complete community that's secret. Pretty much as Borman said.

Anyone here ever wandered on the underweb?

I just recently heard a friend of mine saying that because the way TOR brower works you will get in jail even if you are searching for "how to cultivate flowers".

I've done plenty of those but they were far from nefarious:

1)I get a PM from someone who knows I collect certain items.
    2)We negotiate a price.
3)They get money, I get the item.
    4)The end!

Of course I'm sure there are items more interesting, mysterious, grey market, and "rare" than the crap I've acquired this way going on around these parts. If you really wanted to hide anything from the admins you'd be an idiot to send a plain text PM here. IRC is better off especially if you bother to use some basic encryption.

Your friend is incorrect. While a lot of people use TOR for nefarious purposes (drug dealing, kiddy porn, etc) it also provides a space for freedom of speech purposes. I read something not too long ago how TOR was becoming popular in less than ideal lands to speak your mind. Problem is that anyone can setup an endpoint including law enforcement. There is a difference between browsing pakistansucksass.com with TOR and browsing pakistansucksass.onion though.

Wouldn't surprise if me law enforcement agencies around the world automatically label anyone using TOR (or even knowing of TOR) to be of some sort of criminal element.

the TOR network is actually signifcantly larger than the surface web, and you do get just about everything from cp to mirrors of clearnet websites for backup sake. Its safe IF you use it right, just running it directly from the software but you won't get in any trouble if you aren't caught on the wrong areas. But you also can't search the network, you do have to know what to look for and find the direct link.

But from my time i have scowered there I have never found any real game communites, but again if you don't make the url public you can't really find it, so it might be out there.

Elitism, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

ASSEMbler is probably one of the older, larger and more well known beta/prototype/unreleased communities but the best place for such a community to hide is in plain sight.

Every community has its own divisions, ASSEMbler included. If you think along the lines of your high school goths, stoners, geeks, jocks etc, its no surprise that some people develop love or hate relationships and form their own little social groups and have their own secrets here as with anywhere else.
