Does anyone know of anywhere where source code to commercial games (or games that would have been commercial games but they got canceled before they were released) or engines for arcade machines/consoles is available (either released legally or "made available" in the same way that all the betas, prototypes etc are released).
id has released most of its source. www.idsoftware.com From what I hear, id made a few games that were kinda popular. -hl718
A quick google should point you to the halflife 2 sources i suppose Also Microsoft released the complete source code and resources for Mechcommander 2 : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...DE-C3E5-46BE-B3A5-729581269A9C&displaylang=en Theres probably heaps more but those i remember from the top of my head.
The ID software sources, the half-life 2 source and the Mechcommander2 source are for PC. I specifically asked about consoles or arcade machines, not computers.
Actually that depends on which part of your question you stress when you pronounce or read it. Anyway "whatever" then. later.
No need to be an ass about it, especially considering that both the id sources and MC 2 can be used to compile console ports. Where do you think the Dreamcast version of Quake came from? It was a port of id's code. Where do you think the Xbox version of Quake 3 came from? It was a port of id's code. Why do you think Microsoft updated Mechcommander 2 for XNA before releasing it? So it could compile for the X360. Just because you don't know what to *do* with the source code doesn't mean you should be a jerk to those that answer your questions. If you don't understand something you should simply ask more questions. -hl718
Well if you are looking for source code that has already been ported to run on a specific console, well then good luck because there aren't any out there that are readily available. Otherwise you're stuck having to port the code to the specific console.
Lots of source code that does manage to fall through the cracks of the developer rarely leaks out on the internet. Games like Tribes and plenty of other game source code is out there, but most people arent willing to release it because of the risk
Can't some console games be reverse engineered so as to retrieve something similar to the source? Isn't that how the F-Zero X Track Editor was made?
I think the developers already had access to the source since they were both by Nintendo, and although I don't know the details about the 64dd track editor, I'd guess the level editor functionality was incorporated into the cartridge version, in anticipation of the 64dd editor.
there was a port of doom 3 for the xbox out i think and some newer quake 2 developments where able to replace all the copyrighted stuff and make a complete free version oh and last but not least beatmania has its sourcecode on one of the game cds there was a whole thread in the forum and someone even uploaded the sourcecode
I have the source codes for Columns Game Gear and Cliffhanger Genesis/Sega CD, but I doubt you would be interested in such things.
