Hi all Im not too clued up on the consoles to be honest. I have acquired 2 old consoles recently and after searching the interweb..I arrived here. See photos below. I have discovered that the console on left is a DVT4 but was curious as to whether the other may be a debug unit. I only ask as they came as a pair from an auction and I have heard some do not have Debug Kit written on front. Can you advise by looking at photos. I am collecting them later today so can look at them proper and send more photos then. Also they come with no cables, so can you advise what I need to view whats on the Hard Drive. I only have cables for 360s at my house so not sure if they will be compatable. Would value your advice and comments cheers all.
You are correct about the left system, that is a DVT-4. The Black console is hard to tell without looking at the bottom of the console, there should be a silver/matte grey sticker labelled "Debug Kit". Cable with the 360 will NOT work with the XBOX. The connections are completely different, however the power cable is a standard figure 8 cable. To view what's on the Hard Disk you'll need to power them on. I hope this helps all your questions, if you want any more information about the DVT-4 it is covered in the XBOX Archive in my signature.
The only 100% sure way to distinguish a debug kit from a retail system is to look at the MCPX chip on the motherboard. (Debug systems will have an MCPX X2, whereas retail systems will have an MCPX X3.). If the system hasn't been opened, though, having 128 MB RAM is a sufficient check.
There are a handful of debug kits with 64mb, so even that test isn't 100%. If it is a debug kit, the sticker will likely say it though, as Hex said.
Hi guys Thanks for replies. Ive had a weeee mishap, not happy. I plugged in the Black one, which seems to be a standard box. Then in my eagerness to see what treasure there may be on the Dev Kit Hard Drive....early COD prototype, etc lol (dreaming)...Anyhoo, plug in back and.....BANG!!! One learnt a valuable lesson today, check the effing voltage on boxes, Dev Kit 100v...plug in 240v...I blew the fuse in plug and god knows what I have done in damage to the DEV Kit...?? I will take down to repair man this week to have a look at it. My issues now are if easy repair, he no doubt has to open box to fix, thus breaking the seals and stickers which are all in mint condition. Which may reduce my resale if I move it on. Any advice on best worst case scenario on possible damage done. I AM A NUMPTY! Lol.
Try to get in touch with a local forum user instead and let them repair it. If there is anything on it, it should be dumped and you don't know what that repairman will do.
All it most likely did is blow the PSU out if it even did that beyond blowing the built in fuse. Main console PCB and all other hardware should be fine. Worst case scenario is replacing the PSU. Might can find one from a 240V retail console as they all have the same parts there. Be sure to check the plug though. Since it is a dev kit it could be like the revisions 1.0 through 1.5 depending on year it was made. If the plug from the PSU to the main PCB is single row then a 1.0 or 1.1 PSU will be needed. If i's double row and resembles the ATX standard plug then a 1.2 through 1.5 PSU will be needed. Either way the console will need to be opened to get to it. Hopefully just the fuse blew out and that can be repaired easily by someone with a bit of know how.
Thanks for all your advice guys, mucho appreciated. Taking it down to a local guy (friend of friend) so will watch over him (like an annoying Hawk) whilst he repairs it. Will update if anything juicy on Hard Drive .....knowing my luck it will be a prototype of a very very famous game........Namely A black screen with 2 x vertical white bars hitting a square white ball back and forth lol. Not saying Im jinxed.....but 'if I fell into a barrel of breasts....Id come out..sucking my thumb!"
