Well, I'm in the market for a CRT for my older consoles. I kind of had Sony Trinitron on the mind. I found this in the area for free: Are these decent TV's? Or should I hold off for something else? I apologize if this is in the wrong section, I was torn between here and off topic.
Lol, this is just the picture from the ad, I don't have a model number. It's 27" if that helps, ha. I was hoping someone would recognize this era of trinitron and have some experience with them.
There good for ps2, gc and xbox. Everything else their a hit and miss with retro systems especially light gun games. Best option would be to get an older trintron with at least s-video.
Why should there be probs with old systems and lightguns ? I had a 21" Sony Wega Trinitron (also flatscreen) for more than 10 years and played lots of lightgun games on it without any problems. Also every old system looked fantastic on it if you used RGB Scart, no matter if 8, 16 or more bit systems.
I was mostly going to be using this on older games, newest probably would be PS1, maybe N64. It would be nice to have the option of playing light gun games, even if I don't really have any right now. I had no idea flatscreen CRT's had problems with them. It would be nice to have S-video as well, no idea if this TV has it.. True that, if I end up not liking it I could always take it to recycling or give it to someone else. I know, now people are just giving them away. I'll keep an eye out for the rounded tube ones. S-video would definitely be nice. So there's one of these for sale in the area http://beocentral.com/beovisionavant32 No idea of anything about it, but sounds fancy. Maybe I'll see if he'll take 50 bucks for it =P
ah i see where this wrong information about flat crts comes from: some people seem to think that all flat crts are 100/120hz, which is not true. yes theres problems with lightguns on 100hz tvs, but this has absolutely nothing to do with the flat crt. on a 50/60hz flat crt all lightgun games work same as on a curved screen! and thats not just theory, im a lightgun games lover .
Why not ask the seller? Better yet instead of going thru Ebay and pay extra for shipping, hit Craigslist. You can test the TV locally with a PlugNPlay portable game. The picture indicates a smaller older Trintron flat tube TV.. These all are SD tubes. The last of the generations of Sony Flat CRTs had the speakers on the side. And yes Lightguns do work if an SD Tube; both curved and flat CRTs. I have a preference on the HD WEGA CRTs. You lose lightgun support, but gain in the additional resolutions of 480i-480p-720p-1070i all with NO upscale issues.
Actually I'm only looking in the local ads (not craigslist, but similar). Good idea on the PNP game idea. Ahh, I've seen some with speakers on the sides, was curious which was newer, now I know . I would LOVE an HD CRT, we used to have one years ago (Panasonic I recall) and I loved the picture on it. Unfortunately in one of the moves it ended up somewhere else. I haven't found one local yet, and the damn recyclers won't let me look through the TV's people brought in If the person ever responds to my reply to the ad I'll probably get the Trinitron for now and just keep my eye out for better ones.
I'm not sure this applies to all of them, but I know that we had a big ass either 29 or 32 inch silver clamshell kinda looking backed Sony WEGA as our basement TV that we got new in like 2003 that did I think up to 720p over component which was "HD" for the time (yes I know that some TVs could do 1080i by then) and I played all kinds of lightgun games on that shit all day long without issue. Everything from NES Duck Hunt to Saturn Virtua Cop to XBox Silent Scope(Pelican sniper rifle) worked as it should have. I wish I knew the model since the thing had excellent picture. My brother took it to his place and it started having degauss problems, easy to fix, and the dumbass was like, welp, tube is fucked, and threw it in the trash or I'd still have the thing. HEAVY as all hell though.
There are 100Hz compatible lightguns for a reasonable amount of consoles. If you're in the UK, no TV is going to be 60Hz. If you're in the US, no TV is going to be 100Hz. If it's free, works and has an RGB-wired SCART socket, then it's great! If it has multiple SCART sockets, at least one may not be RGB-wired.
Someone beat me to it apparently. Just keeping my eyes open for another. How are the Panasonic TV's? There's a 36" flatscreen with a big "T" in the top left. $20, but thought it might be a little big. I was thinking more along the 27-32" size.
no clue about the panasonic tvs, but aslong as it isnt hd or 100/120hz it should be okay. if you arent living in an too rural area, maybe grab a okayish free one for the start and then be a bit patient and wait for a highend crt to show up again. like the sony wega trinitrons, or even nicer (as the crt tube is much shorter and saves lots of space) are the Bang & Olufsen MX4000 and MX7000.
Ah, so you're in the US? Televisions aren't going to have RGB SCART sockets, then... so they're not ideal. Look out for a broadcast monitor instead - unless you're happy using s-video.
I live in Canada, so it will be 60Hz. I saw a Bang & Olufsen for sale, but at $450 a little too rich for me. I understand though, considering what they cost new. Yes I am, no RGB for us I'm ok with S-video on CRT, it will still be better than the S-video on the LCD TV. The broadcast monitors are hard to find around here, I'll be keeping my eyes open for sure as they do sound kick ass. I'm probably gonna offer 10 bucks for the Panasonic and go with that for now. I'll look at it in person to see if it's too big, but if I can carry it, I'll take it. Provided they still have it. I've gotten my hopes up twice now, it really sucked to find the HD CRT had sold already >_<
You need to just go for it, really... especially if it's free. Worse case you can just relist it for free. By 36" flatscreen, I assume you mean widescreen CRT? You're never gonna lift that alone! It weighs like 100lbs.
