I'm now trying very hard to understand WHY I put up with IE and spyware and trojans for so long...

Ehh, they *honestly* aren't that different, despite what many people say. I use both, whichever one I open up I just use. :smt045

What are you talking about? In terms of functionality yes they're similar, but who the hell wants to use a browser that eats up RAM like no tomorrow and is contantly assaulted by spyware and adware and other bullshitware and malicious scripts contaning trojans and viruses ????

Worlds apart, I will never go back to IE.

I've just got around to using mouse gestures. Right-click on a link and drag the mouse up a tiny bit to open in a new window, drag down to close, drag left/right to go forwards backwards. Brings lazy browsing to a whole new level...

That's the same thing I was thinking :smt043 . I'll just find a different browser, though, no big deal.

It's great isn't it. :smt023 I was using Mozilla, but I switched to FireFox because I like the GUI better.

Pah, lies all that crap about IE and worms. Utter crap. I've never, ever, ever, gotten any viruses or worms from IE. Only from AOL (and that was my Dad's fault for d/l some email attatchment).

Oh, and I don't install those updates too. I get spyware, but only from sketchy sites.

RAM is meant to be used. As someone said on another board, if you are not using it, then it's being wasted.

I *honestly* can't see the difference. I like some things about FF more, paticularly the way it loads webpages--but I like the fact that IE is compatible with [most of] the internet too.

(Puts on flame retardent pants for all those who will declare FF is sooooo much better :-D)

So its utter crap because its never happened to you? I know other people who've had lots of problems with Internet Explorer.

Fair point for systems that have lots of RAM...but what about those odler machines that need to use those resources elsewhere?

I must say, only compatability issue I have had with Firefox is the Fileplanet download manager...but I don't reall want to use fileplanet anyway :smt042 Oh, and the best thing about Firefox is the tabbed browsing, IMHO.

When I used to use Internet Explorer, it used to randomly crash on me, it was slow as ass, and the amount of spyware I got was sickening (ever tried scanning your PC with Ad-Aware or Spybot? If you're using IE they'll find loads of shit!). Then a few years ago I switched to Opera - and I never got any spyware again, sites downloaded faster (some even look better!), and pretty much everything else was better. OK, so there's 2 sites I can think of that don't work on it, but the benefits REALLY outweigh those two smelly sites.

Haven't used FireFox too much myself - seems awfully basic compared to Opera with its built-in e-mail and newgroup client and stuff, and it doesn't really look like anything new to me after using Opera for so long. Though I suppose it is actually free - with Opera I've had to put up ads on the toolbar all this time, but with the more recent version's Google ads I barely even notice them, and it's kinda funny how they relate to whatever website you're looking at (I often get ads about phpBB hosting and whatnot when I'm here!).

This has nothing to do with some sort of I-Hate-IE attack, einbebop. IE is a great browser, BUT also THE target for spyware/malicious scripts/trojans et al. It's not IE's fault per se, but the fact that its the most widely used browser also makes it the most attcked.

As for RAM usage, RAm wil of course be used. WHat makes FF better than IE in this respect is RAM EFFICIENCY. If an application does pretty much anything the other does but uses ram more efficiently that's a huge plus, anyone with sense obviously would want their system to run better with more efficient ram usage.

Bottom line - even if you don't belueve in trojan /worm infection through IE - IE is a good browser, but being THE target of choice of spyware et al have rendered it unusable.

Point taken, it wasn't an attack. Probably just have to use FF a bit more and mess with it to see some differences. Though Opera sounds a bit interesting as well. Ah, I guess having three browsers can't hurt anything, now can it? :smt042

I never get malicious virii either, but I get spyware like a motherfucker. IE sucks... plain and simple.

  17. Anyone still steadfastly using IE, rejoice, there is hope. IE with XPSP2, a good firewall (Zonealarm) and antivirus (AVG), and optional popup blocker will repel nearly everything that tries to worm its way onto your computer. I say optional because while IE XPSP2 has a built-in popup blocker, I've found having two blockers can catch some popups that the other missed - I also use the built-in blocker on AvantBrowser (which I'd highly recommend to people who prefer IE, as it is not a browser replacement but an IE addon). A good firewall and antivirus should be standard equipment no matter WHAT browser you're running.

Anyone else think for the price of an OS you should get that shit for free... like... uh... that other OS that doesn't cost anything in the first place?

Ddi they fix SP2? When it first came out it was a big hunk of shit. M$ idea of security is bolting all the windows. Sure nothing gets in, but nothing gets out either.

My favourite aspect of Firefox outside of the practical anti-spyware thing, is adblock. Haven't seen a banner ad in weeks...
