Yes because the Japanese have always been huge Xbox fans... Halo was the 4th best selling Xbox game with a staggering... 80,000 units... out sold by all the Dead or Alive games... including a 3 to 1 on Dead or Alive 3... Halo 3 is the 7th best selling Xbox 360 game with 114,000 units... Halo 2 is the 7th best selling Xbox game with a eye watering 53,000 units...
Isn't Dead or Alive just a shitty tit jiggle simulator with some volleyball physics thrown in too? I wouldn't call it better than Halo, even though the genres are totally different.
The question asked in the Famitsu poll was more like "what sequel do you want most that isn't announced or that will probably never get made?" That's why MGS5 isn't on the list - it's a given. That's also why each game had such a low number of votes - people were throwing out ideas at random. Nice ideas, though.
The fighting games in the series are pretty mediocre too..the only thing that's really memorable about them is the bouncing boobs.
When I made that post, I was in essence trying to make fun of the general Halo fanboy (I like Halo myself, but I'm not gaga over it) who thinks Halo should be on every "top games list" there is, regardless of the list's context. Maybe I was too subtle, though I hope no one else took that statement seriously. Oh, and I'm well aware that the Japanese think Halo is dogshit... their loss, that's what I say!
Well Halo and 3 are the best selling American origin games on the Xbox and Xbox 360 so it's not that bad, just the fact the Xbox and Xbox 360 sold poorly.
There are plenty of games that sell like shit and are awesome (Okami, both the Jet Set Radios, Panzer Dragoon series, etc.). In fact, I generally take poor sales these days to show the game is good.
Using sales figures to say a game sucks is just ridiculous. Consider games like Viewtiful Joe and Ikaruga from just last gen. They were aimed at a small audience so of course they're gonna sell badly but the games themselves were excellent. Shenmue failed IMO because it was too different from anything seen at the time, and I have no doubt that a Shenmue sequel would fail too because people would rather play another cookie cutter Call of Duty sequel than anything new and different :-(
There is suck in the personal subjective sense and suck in the aggregate. Though you might think that Shenmue, Viewtiful Joe and Ikaruga don't suck, it is clear that many other people think that they do. And though I'll agree with you that these games (well, Ikaruga and Viewtiful Joe, anyway) are great, individual opinion doesn't control here. The game buying population as a whole has given these games a thumbs down. Our peeps of joy whenever a new, decent vertical shooter (or fighter or whatnot) comes out are silenced by the other 90%, slack jawed idiots screaming, "What the fuck is this shit!" We're just a small minority that enjoys games that the vast amount of people don't like that much. The vast majority of people think they suck, and their collective opinion matters more to companies because their are more of them. Yeah, it's really easy to look down our noses at WWII first person shooters and yearly sports games because we don't like them, but the bottom line is that there are more of them than us. That said, I don't think theres too much to complain about really. It's not like we don't get any actual good games anymore. There's just not enough of us to warrant getting games we like at a pace that makes us happy. We just want more more more. It still makes me wonder how/why anyone appeals to me anymore. I mean...the big money is clearly with the million, two million selller blockbuster. Perhaps we're a more dedicated segment of the market...and if someone treats us right they know they're guaranteed our money. Or perhaps some companies genuinely think that a game that doesn't fit the general cookie cutter of what is popular right now can sell well.
I dunno, Death Smiles seemed to sell fairly well (well, OK, depends on what you mean by selling well, ;-) ) and it is fucking brilliant. :love2:
Or have just never heard of them. Despite what all those Treasure whores say, Ikaruga was just as much a part of the shooting nitche as anything else. It just *COULD* have appeal to the masses. Doesn't mean it did.
