I'm looking for an old TV show, but the usual places won't handle Japanese characters.

Anyone know some Japanese torrent search engine?

Most Japanese torrent sites were taken down a few years back. I can't say if there are any big ones still going but I'm sure there must be.. I just don't know.

So what's everyone using instead, nowadays? Other P2P networks? I know of (but haven' used) Winny and Perfect Dark - are those still in widespread use?

I'm quite interested in this, where do japanese pirate stuff? Although with Hard Off, Book Off and the such it isn't as necessary as in Spain, for example...

For weeaboo stuff you can check http://nyaa.se and http://tokyotosho.info. The Japanese themselves don't really use public torrent sites, they tend to use semi-darknets like Share and Perfect Dark.

Winny and WinMX were the big ones but the police took them down years ago. They went after WinMX big time and even fined users downloading stuff such as TV shows.

And their downfall caused them to be replaced by Share, which eventually was found insecure as well, and the current generation is Perfect Dark.

Ah, I forgot all about Share, thanks.
And you can add asiatorrents.me to the list of weeaboo sites.

I just tried PerfectDark and wow... It feels so like going back to 2003 but downloading (unity files anyway) at 1 MB/s instead of 6 KB/s. How can japanese cope with that?

If the show you're referring to had any Japanese idols in it (cameo or otherwise), Hello-Online might have it. If it's possible to actually mention what you're searching for, some of us might know some places with DDLs or streaming sites that might have it.

Pretty sure they imprisoned the author as well. Way to go Japan!

Now that you mention it I think they did. This is what put the shits up most people. Many friends here just stopped using it within a heart beat. I know I slowed down my usage as well.

Torrents are needed though. last night I downloaded the 1st of the new Wheeler Dealers show (went on air 17th) and a load of other UK TV. I mean, These programs are shown for free on TV anyway so it's not like the makers are loosing any money by people in other countries downloading the shows.

You do realize TV isn't about the shows, but about the ads inbetween, right? At least to the network executives it is. If you download a show, or even just record it, you don't get to see (or at least skip over) all their revenue-generating parts of the programming. That's also why they're trying to push DVRs that are unable to skip ad breaks in recordings. You are not their customer, advertisers are.

Yeah, the "in other countries" bit complicates that a bit, but what if it's a show that'll potentially get ad revenue by being shown in other countries later?

True about showing in other countries but let's be honest, about 1% of British TV makes it to Japan and even then it's only for a 6 week run at best. We can't even get good BBC World stuff here like the rest of Asia. When it comes to media such as online TV, internet radio or free city maps, Japan is fucking last. They want to control it all and if it's not a service provided by a Japanese company then you can't have it. No Spotify, Love FM, or anything like that here in Japan :(

How on Earth do you setup Perfect Dark (and why is it called "Perfect Dark"?)? The furthest I can get is for the program to say "perfect dark is online. open port is NOT confirmed". I don't have a firewall, so any ports I've chosen should be open.

Have you entered the address of another user, so PD has an "entry point" into the network so it can bootstrap itself? Then all you gotta do should be waiting for it to connect to more users, and other users to you (the latter being able to do so will confirm you have the required open port). Could take a while though. One it's built up a decent list of peers it should reconnect faster.

How come? What do you mean Share is insecure?
Winny wasn't insecure and nobody cracked their encryption.
The Winny people who got busted posted filenames in public sites, with their ips visible.

That's exactly how I found that website ;)

I got the code from the bootstrap link, and pasted it in "add ip address" and I'm pretty sure that's how I got the program to say "perfect dark is online" instead of "perfect dark is offline", but that's as far as I got.
