Which makes me wonder how it can manage to still sell so many week after week. Who buys them?! Perhaps it coincides with a recent software release or a price drop?
When the systems die after a few years.... Go xbox 360, 4 digits!! whooo. Cant say I blame the Japanese at this point though, games are definatly slow that the majority of people would enjoy there
Still, get as much Japanese Xbox and Xbox 360 stuff as you can - guaranteed to be ultra rare in years to come! @Taucias: I think there has been price drops and embarassingly the stuff still won't sell.
I always see these numbers out of japan, but where do they come from? They're accurate down to the unit, which I would think is pretty hard to do. The differance between 98 gba and 101 xbox is pretty hard to calculate on a national level...
They're still selling the original GBA? I havn't seen it for sale anywhere in America recently, or is it just in Japan now? And is the 360 doing any better then usual? That number seems suprisingly high for it being the Xbox 360 in Japan......
English sites generally base them off other publications. Dengeki Online has a pretty accurate sales list, AFAIK.
Maybe these sales include wapanese tourists and hardcore gamers that get to go to Japan. That might count for a lot.
A tiny fraction, at best. Japan's homogeneity is painfully apparent when you're there. And out of the tourists... most wouldn't bother w/ a Japanese console. THat's only for us weirdos.
Population of japan is 127million...thats a bit under half a USA (296million). This means less than 1 in 1000 people are buying a DS in a week, and thats a reasonable figure considering a recent hardware launch. EDIT: Should also be noted that "Such a small country" is 10th biggest in the world by population  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population
To put it in perspective, Japan has more or less, half of the population of the United States, yet it's usable land space is only about half the size of California. That's to say that 70% of Japan's mountanous regions are useless. Not totally true, but there's really not a lot of stuff there... not even tea, and definitely not a lot of people or buildings. Read some statistics on Tokyo, and Kanto. It'll blow your mind. Japan has reinvented the term "all your eggs in one basket".
