    Hey, recently I was wondering how Japanese create the joint names for popular items (i.e. famicom - family computer; sufami - super famicom ; sutotsu - street fighter 2; dorakue - dragon quest). Are there any other game series/console names that have these nicknames?

    Tons, not only for gaming but for everything. For example, Starbucks is often abbreviated "Sta-ba". It's a shortcut because of convenience:

    Starbucks in Japanese = Sutaabakkusu (スターバックス). That's rather inconvenient, just like Famirii Konpyuutaa... so sometimes people choose to combine two syllables to make it flow better: スタックス

    Other examples for this would be:

    悪ドラ: AkuDora (Akumajo Dracula/Castlevania)
    スーマリ: SuuMari (Super Mario)
    ときメモ: TokiMemo (Tokimeki Memorial)
    プレステ: PureSute/PleSte (PlayStation)
    サタコレ/ドリコレ: SataKore/DoriKore (official budget releases for Saturn and Dreamcast, abbreviated from Saturn/Dreamcast Collection)
    ゲーセン: GeeSen (Game Center/Arcade)
    マックド: MakkuDo (McDonald's)

    I've passed the N% in JLPT so I do know some basic japanese, I was asking specifically for game series and consoles. Didn't know about AkuDora, that sounds a bit stupid :p

    I hate the way Japanese do this as do many Japanese. It's bloody stupid and lazy. The most recent one that annoys me is Sumafon (smartphone) its not even that much shorter than the real Japanese word which is only 1 syllable longer (sumatofonu)..

    スノボ = SnowBoard

    There are shit tons of these, not only for games, but as stated, everything. I remember when Phantasy Star Universe came out and I gave it a whirl (in vein). It took 2 days before Partner Machinery was dubbed パシリ. I guess we abbreviate as well, in English, but not as much I'd say.

    language evolves and changes to convenience even in english there are many words not used now that were used 100 years ago, some have been shortened and became the norm. its a tool for communication and can be shaped modified and reshamed mixed etc.

    sometimes it can be annoying true, but theres no way to stop it.

    Forgot my favorite one: Alsok. Short for 'Always Security Ok'.

    Beat that, linguists.

    There are literally acronyms for everything in gaming from hardware, titles to in game terminology. You can fill a book on them.

    In fighting games, フレ means frames (as in frames per second or frames of animations). しゃがパン is short for crouching punch (commonly referred to low P in the Western community) or しゃがみパンチ in Virtua Fighter. Every fighter has a ton of terms....

    My favorite one is for First Kitchen, ファーキン, sounds like fucking.

    Sounds like something I'd see from a third rate computer repair firm. And there are a LOT of those around here making medicine puns.

    I really do dislike these shortened words. Many a time I have no idea what the fuck young people are talking about. So lazy IMO. Many of the new shorter words aren't even that much shorter or make any sense since they don't sound like the full word, especially anything game related. Drives me nuts.

    That's part of any language really. Think of it as slang. If you want to remain hip, you have to learn them. Not going to be picking up any schoolgirls without this knowledge ;)

    They are shorter in the sense that there are less syllables to pronounce.

    Happens so much in Australia. Also ends with a -ie or -y. It's so frustrating to hear.

    It's not like English doesn't have its share of portmanteaus:

    smog = smoke + fog
    metrosexual = metropolitan + heterosexual
    blog = web + log
    taxicab = taximeter + cabriolet
    avionics = aviation + electronics
    Metroidvania = Metroid + Castlevania

    Oh, and for Japanese, don't forget one of the big ones in video games: Pokemon = pocket monster (poketto + monsuta-).

    One of my favorite Japanese portmanteaus is the retailer Hard Off. That's a shortening of English "hardware" plus "off" from advertising expressions such as "50% off". It sounds quite hilarious in English due to its similarity to "hard on".

    I think he does :) I'm too old for school girls now anyway. A nice lady in her mid to late 20's is ideal :p

    I've never heard of some of them plus they're not really the same as the words we are talking about. Smog for example is an actual word. Geisen (Gay Sen) sounds nothing like Game Center but that's what it become with those who think they are trendy. They do it for every word they can think of.

    Nothing drops school girls' panties faster than a quick barrage of the latest popular lingo. Walk up to one and start saying things like あげぽよ、テヘペろ、あーね、リア充、かわうぃーねー、からの〜 and so on. You'll be guaranteed to get laid within seconds.

    I hate it when Japanese abbreviate a word by only one syllable.. The other day I saw ワンピー instead of ワンピース in a fashion magazine, ffs how much extra effort is that extra syllable. Some of the longer words (where you cut of 2 or more syllables) at least make more sense to abbreviate. I mean who still uses the full 自動販売機、 when you can just say 自販機 , or 始発電車 instead of 始電。
