If I was out in a group I would hit a nomi/tabihodai from about 7 or 8, this getting you to the point that when you hit the bar, you only fancy one or two more drinks.

That or go to an actual bar poor japanese salary men would go to, you won't spend more than 2000 yen there. Or my favourite nomihodai at a beer garden - while you will end up leaving at 10, you will be in such a merry mood you will only just make it back to your room!

See I think drinking in japan is actually very cheap, you just gotta avoid gaijin/host/posh bars (I went in one hotel bar when I was really trying to impress this girl - 2000 yen each just to get it). Hit the small bar that serves food as well and drinks will only be 3/4 thousand a head.

As for clubs, unless you are going to a euro/j pop trance/sweat fest you are going to lose over 5000 yen ish in my experience. I prefer lots of drinks with a very long meal at like a yakitori place or similar.

Edit- for those who think an 360 costs less than a fiver - look closer at the price label. There may just be a 39 there....

Road trip :O. Cool. I did Nagoya -> Tokyo Disney land on a bus... i'm never doing that again for 8 hours i was sat with my knees up against my chest cursing the small space infront of me, blaming it on the bus... then when we get there the girl infront of me moves her seat forward and gets up... how i managed to not strangle her to death i'll never know haha.

One of the guys I know who just came back from a yeah over there took some time to hitch hike up and down the country... which is madness surely.

If i win the lotto tonight (euromillions is at £100,000,000 now) i'm goin tommorow and buying a huge house, anyone wanting to tag along let me know. 360s for everyone! haha

The coolest bit is knowing a guy with multiple houses in japan! Best thing about going to that uni in japan was making contacts with useful people. It was a private uni so everyone there was on either a scholarship or was stupidly rich!

I hear you on the bus. I did a night bus from hiroshima to osaka. It was the hottest most cramped place on earth. And someone happened to have very smelly feet. It was a nightmare, I only saved about 3000 yen over the old shinkansen. I went to disney via train - never have I done so much walking in a station it was awful.

I would not hitchhike in japan. You hear stories... Burly truckers vs Gaijin... (!)

Good luck on the lottery by the way!

Man, lots of university students. Oh, to be young again. I had a fun time, but had some rough times too. Anyways, my itenirary will be mainly in Tokyo, although I'll do a day trip snowboarding, and 3 days in Shikoku w/ the in-laws. I just need some cold weather... warm is nice, but it's the same temperature EVERY fucking day. It gets monotonous.

Never heard any. I actually heard good stories on one forum, but, that was 1 person.

Well it was my obasan who did all my washing who warned me never to hitchhike in japan. She said that "even men are at risk" with a knowing nod. I took it with a pinch of salt which is how I intended it to be taken here!

She also warned me about dressing in a black japanese school boy uniform I picked up. She said it would make me look like a yakuza. On her list of bad things were - girls who uses fake tan (cos they must have an std), men in fancy suits (yakuza) and takoyaki from street sellers. She was quite funny and a proper obasan to boot!

I kinda like shikoku - It is a bit more rural and green. Also the train ride that I took along the coast from takamatsu was really pretty. Although a lot of my time there is pretty vague as there was a lot of alcohol and batting cages and tabihodai at a place with a big wheel and onsen and alcohol. All one big blur to me really, but it was golden week!

Hell yeah, have you ever seen a hentai movie? is like they rape people all the time around there. Funny girls seem to like it, here they would cap a tazer up your ass...

(I'm joking above, no need to tell me i'm an idiot)

Weird, I didnt know gaijin-yakuzas existed. Some dude told me tanned girls were kinda slutty, specially if they dye their hair blond.

    A) she was a kinda mad lady! B) You do see some gaijin - dodgy blokes but they are unlikely to be in yakuza. I got told I look like a host more than a yakuza. Which I can always go with if I need the money!

Oh and the ultra tanned girls are your basic lower class slutty girl in general. Go read an issue of EGG magazine, that will give you a flavour of that particular type of girl!

(Don't worry - I'm not going to tell you you're an idiot! It is just a lot of people are that ignorant to make that type of comment not in jest (same with that pedo-con remark))

If i go to Nagoya I could get free accomodation in my ex girlfriends parents spare apartment which is pretty cool, its a pretty swanky ass place too (her family is pretty minted). Plus i'd get to see her again which would be cool cos even though we had a pretty explosive break up we are now good friends. But i'll probably be staying in the language schools accomodation (yamasa.org for those that are interested)

Any of you guys spent much time in Nagoya at any point? When I was there i found this awsome street (well more of a back alley haha) where it was all computer shops, it was like heaven... but I have no bloody idea where it was, and my ex hasnt got a clue either (or so she says, maybe she's keeping it from me in some cruel game!)... i would put it down to me imagining it if I didn't have tons of stuff I bought from there....

Maybe you could pick up a cheap 360 down there (keeping it on topic see!)

Just checked out that yamasa place, looks bloody good - but quite expensive. I bet you would be looking to burn about 1500 quid a month including most living costs. Out of interest how long are you doing? And if I may be so very rude, how much-ish?

well the "plan" last year was to do a month on this course

    http://www.yamasa.org/acjs/english/programs/silac.html

    Fees are as follows:

    - course = 123200yen
    - accommodation = 70000yen
    - futon rental = 8000yen (if you supply your own futon you can have said fee removed)
    - total for 4 week course = 201200yen

which at current exchange comes to roughly 970 of our british pounds. You've got flight on top of that, which in August would be £600ish i guess. Depending on when I finish uni this year (im doing my Masters so its different to standard degree) i might be able to go sooner thus savin a few quid.

But all in all £2000-£2500 should cover just about everything (unless i found that street/alley again, in which case i'd probably need more like £20,000-£25,000 hahaha)

Last year when I was scheduled to go, they had too many students to fit in accomodation, and so spill over (of which I was one) were being put up in a ryokan (for same accom price)

I hope that I can actually go this year ^_^
