I live in the US. Have my entire life. Never really been around places that sell sushi/sashimi.

At the university I am attending, there is a sushi shop across from my dorm. I can use my meal plan and get some food and a soft drink and have it count as a meal on my meal plan. I don't have to pay out of pocket.

I got something called "Ultimate Chili roll". It is raw tuna wrapped around rice and seaweed. It has Serrano peppers on top.

I started eating. Tentatively, of course. The first bites were pretty good. I liked the texture and the flavor was pretty good.

About a quarter of the way through, my stomach revolted. "What the hell, man?" It said to me. "You realize what you're eating?"

I had not, in fact, given it too much thought. My stomach continued. "This tastes the was the fist section in Kroger smells! RAW FISH!"

I tried to ignore it and continue eating. Put the next bite in my mouth. This is the point that my stomach too over. It was a silent protest this time. The muscles in my throat merely locked. Here I was with a mouthful of tuna that I was never going to be able to swallow. I assessed my options. "down" or "Out". "Down" did not appear to be an option.

I surrendered. I "liberated" the tuna in my mouth. The rest is still lying in wait in my fridge.

I had a $9 box of Mac and Cheese for supper.

I was joking that the mac and cheese cost $9 because I was unable to eat the sashimi.
I paid $9 and all I got for supper was mac and cheese.

Seriously unless the place is Japanese owned and run, I don't eat. Half the time in cheap places they lie to you about what the fish is in cheap places. The Salmon is dyed trout, the tuna is snapper or whatever... a good test is to ask them how often they get their fish. If they don't say " in the morning", leave. Some types of fish must be rested...

    It's complex.

Hmm... you guys are eating the wrong Tuna then. You realize the "best" sashimi are tuna, to the point of the Japanese sending certain ones straight to the endangered species list.

It's simply mind over matter at first, Paul. You failed your mind.

ASSEMbler, do some places really do that to fish? I thought most of the cheaper places (or places in a city with no access to the ocean and therefore no good sushi) just served fish that had been frozen.

B/c of the endangered thing? You know that's just the bluefin, right? General maguro should be okay for a while. At least until our generation dies.

Protip: Never eat Sushi on a Sunday in Japan.

Sushi is somewhat cheap in the supermarkets in the UK, It's not great but its not bad. I had a version made with chicken from a well known supermarket, That was nice. Curried and tomato chicken in rice/sea weed.

well, I actually like those sushi bentos from Tesco in the UK. They're not great but they're edible(if you can call them sushi:p)

I don't like tuna, it has a bland taste and is chewy. While salmon is crisp and tasty.

    Tesco sushi?

I'm pretty sure they can be sued for calling that stuff sushi.
