Katsu curry/katsu kare recepie

    Hello,

    Anyone got an authentic japanese alll home made recepie that doesnt involve store bought cubes of curry?

    It's not an authentic Japanese meal and regarded as foreign food in Japan (also eaten with a spoon, not sticks) but I'm afraid I don't know any recipe with home made ingredients for the Kare. If you decide not to bother the cubes though, here's one:

    50g japanese curry block
    200g meat (chicken, beef, pork)
    2 carrots
    1 spring onion
    300ml of water
    250g cooked rice (125g rice, let it soak)
    some oil for broiling

    Roughly translated into English (I found the recipe on a German recipe page for singles & students some time ago and used it since ^-^):

    Chop the curry block into raw pieces. Cut the meat in cubes. Peel carrots, wash them and cut them in slices. Spring onion has to be divided in 1cm long pieces. Get tha oil in tha pan !!11 and roast the carrots and meat till it's done. Add water+onions and let it cook for approx. 3min. Add the curry block and let it melt, boil up and stew for about 5min. -> finished.

    Well, this is a recipe published on a webpage for students and singles, so don't expect the gourmand upperclass taste ^^
    I ate a cube-made Kare Raisu for a few times and did not notice such a big difference to the Japanese version.

    curry powder:

    6 chili peppers, dry (adjust to your taste)
    2 table spoon cilantro, grains
    1 tea spoon mustard, grains
    1 tea spoon black pepper, grains
    1 tea spoon fenugreek, seeds
    ½ tea spoon ginger, milled
    ½ tea spoon curcuma, milled

    can be refined with some apple and/or honey to give it a smooth and

    sweet taste.

    Great. Thanks a lot, I'm gonna use that later myself. Put it together with the recipe I quoted and you have a perfect JPN fast food menu :lol:

    BTW I absolutely LOVED "Kare" when I was in Japan. Ate it everytime I saw such a restaurant, even between the actual meals :D
    And I still have a photo of a particular tasty-looking version:

    No, but I have advice: Avoid it like the plague. I chalk up Curry as another one of those foods that Japanese have royally fucked up. Why anyone would eat that shit in Tokyo when there is authentic Indian curry all over the place is beyond me.

    I love indian curry, but that royally fucked up shit isn't too bad either if you ask me, at least not for a cheap meal inbetween.

    Pricey, but worth it. So fucking good.

    You can eat good food cheap if you know where to go. This is generally pricier than that. I don't think I've gotten out of there for less than 5000 yen, but I have a couple of beers, one curry, and usually split the gigantic shrimp w/ whomever I'm with.

    Japanese curry is different than Indian curry but that doesn't make it shit like most stuff they touch. I love japanese curry.

    What you need to do is buy some packets of HOUSE CURRY RUE. Then get yourself carrots, meat (chicken or pork goes best), 1 whole onion because most of it will dissolve in to the curry anyway, banana milk (Made using a real banana in a blender) and if you must some other vegetables such as Egg Plant.

    The banana milk may sound odd but believe me, it really does add that extra richness to the curry. All the best curry houses in Japan use in.

    Eating out in Japan is dirt cheap, just don't expect high quality food but it sure beats what I'm cooking at home. Here in Kyoto I can pretty much eat anything for a 1000Â¥ or less..

    Actually I think you went to the right places.

    The restaurant market here is crazy competitive, which keeps the prices somewhat reasonable when dealing with mortals. Nicer dinners of course get pricey. Americans will like not having to tip, though.

    I'm on a high protein diet now, so I have to spend money. 3 times a week I eat sashimi from the grocery plus a slab of fish and that alone is over 1000 yen. Then a drink, and sometimes some vegetables on the side. Then I have a snack about 2 hours later. Pricey.

    Japan is soooo much cheaper to eat out than the UK. I love Katsu Kare - Wagamamas do one here but it's too spicy and ruins it. They also have no idea what I am ordering when I say it properly :)

    Wagamamas katsu isnt very nice... There are a couple of places that have some good ones in london. Around china town mostly. There was one place that had the best in london but they have changed chef i think and its gone abit south. Thats mostly why im making it at home now. That and i have to use that fricking expensive rice cooker i have :)
