Has anyone heard of someone having their
    residency revoked for speeding tickets?

Well I got a ticket for crossing an orange line in Tokyo and speeding as well. No problems at all.

Never heard of anyone having problems their residency revoked. Maybe if they did not pay the fine on time or they/their boss did not apologize enough it might get messy. Also if they were speeding really badly in a residential area that would be taken seriously.

Never heard of that happening, but I do know some places certain crimes committed have different punishments, I think in India if your caught with certain drugs you could be killed for it, I don't remember exactly but have heard of it.

Many countries will kill you for drug possession. Singapore will for smuggling.

While the police will indeed threaten to deport you (they did me) they have no authority to do so. Immigration has to do that. If you never see a judge, you won't be deported. Considering you can actually be a foreigner, serve a sentence and not be deported for a real crime, I'll go out on a limb and say you're going to have to have a lot of mother fucking speeding tickets to get your gaijin card taken away.

Maybe I could see it for something related to street racing or the like. For your average run of the mill speeding ticket though that seems a bit harsh.

Note that real "traffic crime" (manslaughter and whatnot) do carry quite stiff penalties here though. Even if it's just negligence (no alcohol), you will likely serve a few years if someone dies.

nope. I got a 30'000 yen fine a few months back for doing 120kmph on a 50kmph road (4 f*ing lanes at 1am with not a soul in sight). Japanese road speed limits are far too slow if you ask me.

The again if you're caught doing it time and time again they may get fed up with you I guess.

I just recently got my Japanese drivers license. Talk about a pain in the ass! I've yet to drive a car here though, so I ask you long time residents: how bad are the police here with lumping in extra frivolous tickets? I mean, in the US if you get a speeding ticket, your usually looking at one or two extra bullshit tickets thrown in for good measure. Is that common here too?

No. As long as you don't wind them up and just agree to what they say you may even get a reduced ticket. For me I should have got 6 points on my license plus the fine but all I got was the fine then had to attend a 1 day "safety driving" course. That was great though because I got to drive one of those simulators :)

Cool, thanks. Yeah the simulator looks badass, but it wasn't powered up when I went to the motor vehicle center. They did have a pretty badass touch-screen hand eye coordination tester running. I think I got the high score on the thing, and some old lady complemented me. Must be all those video games.

I've been driving for 6 years and I've yet to be even pulled over let alone issued a ticket. So when my parents finally took them off their insurance, their monthly payments went up about $100. My good driving record balanced out my dad's bad driving record. Lol.

Be glad you weren't trying for an Ogata Bike license. Average tries to get the license regardless of skill: 8. Japanese are pros when it comes to wasting time. You clearly haven't been to a Japanese dentist yet if the license thing fucked you off that bad.

Since I don't play mine sweeper at work, it's hard for me to get all the days off to go get the license. It's nowhere near the cool part of town, which means I take half a day at least each trip.

Probably for not paying them. The same can happen in the USA.

I play solitare at work. How easy is it to get a solitare-based job in JP?

Also, what is involved in getting the driving license? Like, in short-hand list form.

*EDIT* I lied, I actually play Counter-Strike on my laptop and solitare between rounds.

Depends on where your from. Not so bad for UK (and other) citizens. US have some more hoops to jump through. If you're just getting a license (not trasnferring one) you have to shell out some dough for school, or take a painfully difficult test a few times.

My guess would be that's an automatic revokation of license, but I'm the guy that hates cars and will always strive to live in a city that doesn't require one.

By transferring one... do you mean from, say, the USA?

Licenses in the USA are a joke. I drove for 10 days on a provisional (never did before that). When I got to the test center they took me around the block where I had to watch my speed past a school, do a 3 point turn, emergency brake, then pull back into the test center.

The 'written' part was 15 multiple choice questions on a touch screen.

No wonder there are so many clowns on the road here in NC.
