I don't think I am the only one that has wondered why MS/Rare has not revived, or re-released the old KIS. Anyone think there is ever a chance of this happening?

I must agree with you on that. I just didn't get why they didn't do it when the getting was good.

Unfortunately a lot of Rares old IP's are gathering dust. Shame really as they were the best 3rd party developer for Nintendo until Microsoft buyout. Though would KI3 be any good? or would it be full of all this microtransaction shit that is happening nowdays. 10 playable characters pay to use more instead of unlocking bonuses the old fashioned way by cheats or rewarding players by finishing the game.

and most of all the fatalities would be censored or just not implemented.

Anyways, the N64 KI Gold was the best one.

I think Microsoft just made a deal with some TV network over using the rights of the name ( as they had legal troubles beforehand ), this could be an indicator that something is in the works here, or they're porting the games to XBLA.

The arcade original version was the best in my opinion. I wasn't a big fan of KI2 or KI Gold, but they were good. I doubt that if KI3 was made that we'd ever be satisfied with it.

    Ditto.
Part of the reason it isn't on Live is it requires a custom emulator to run (or at least Mame) that wouldn't be good for much else besides these games. It would probably be easier to rebuild from source and implement a different video configuration than getting the arcade isos to run properly.

I find it odd that they decided against using pre-rendered sprites as in the arcade versions and went 3D on console. The pre-rendered stuff was obviously from higher quality models, and outside of the somewhat !? way the documentation described how to implement 2D microcode it couldn't have been more complex than what Ogre Battle 64 pulled off.

Just saying, it could only have been cost/return arguments that kept them from putting KI1 on console.

Sadly, what tools existed for the arcade games are little more than dead links nowadays. Not a lot of love.

It is *very* unlikely that it would be easier to port the original games versus emulating. The source code to the games is reasonably likely to be lost. Where as they can steal MAME for free like many people have done.

The reason the N64 and KI Gold used "3D" for the backgrounds was very simple. KI2 had something like a 500 megabyte hard drive jam packed with graphical data. The N64 late in its life, which is not when KI Gold came out, has typicalyl 32 megabytes. So not having prerendered backgrounds was a necessity.

KI1 was ported to SNES, but I assume you mean why it wasn't on N64. It never made it to the N64 likely because the N64 was delayed. But even if it had come out, it would have needed similar changes as KI Gold to fit onto a cartridge. All the FMVs would have been cut. The highly detailed backgrounds would have been redone at much lower detail in 3D graphics or simplier 2d ones. It's all because the N64 cannot match the arcade hardware used by KI which had a ton of memory for graphics. The only thing they shared was the same CPU. The had completely different graphics hardware and storage.

Now if the N64 had used the 64DD, maybe something better could have been done. But even the 64DD storage was maybe half of what KI1 had, and is totally dwarfed by KI2. If you look at the SNES KI port, it's reasonable with enough effort that a good quality KI port to N64 would have been possible but certainly still not the same as the arcade. Anyway, both games will live on in emulation thanks to U64EMU and MAME.

I still play them famously on MAME and N64. Really bothers me they never released any of the older ones on xbl, or the likes. It had always saddened me many of Rares gems were just never pushed back out.

Which version is best. I heard that SNES is a little trimmed down on the graphic side compared to arcade. But what about N64 version?

N64 version is full 3d on the backgrounds vs FMV for the Arcade

SNES is more than a little trimmed down. All the graphics were redone for the SNES. The end product looks very good for SNES. As GoH said, the N64 KI Gold replaced beautifully detailed backgrounds with 3D real time rendered ones. This was required because cartridge storage capacity wasn't enough to hold the original data. And that's just the first problem.

Glad they can both be run on the Xbox by emulation then.

The graphics seem good. There are just 3 characters confirmed and a combo video. The announcer seems way over the top which I love and hate at the same time. I'll really have to wait and see, but I think it's going to be too little too late. I don't know who is developing the game (is it rare, or are they just publishing?), but it's a lot tougher to make a good fighting game than I many realize. The original was so buggy the first time around. Companies that have been at it a while can't even get it right.

We'll see how much blood there is and how big orchid's boobs are. That's really what drew people into the series back in the day, but that stuff really isn't shocking in video games anymore. What's going to set this apart from Street Fighter or Guilt Gear Xrd?

I hope I'm just being cynical, but at best, this game will look incredibly flashy and stylish and play decently enough. It will sell based on nostalgia & younger gamers won't "get" it. I wouldn't expect it to be in Evo or SBO...

The visual style reminds me alot of Street Fighter IV and the health meter/combo interface reminds me of MK9, it's not really holding its ground in terms of visual individuality... compared to the older games. Really not liking how juiced up Jado looks, Jado was one of my favourite characters due to the fact he actually fitted the mold of a Ninja being slimmer and athletic, it was awesome seeing a smaller guy beat the shit out of guys like Sabrewolf and Fulgore.

Also pretty sceptical about the gameplay, seeing as what others have pointed out that it's not done by the original crew of developers, and from what I heard about Silent Hill: Homecoming its not really enticing me as much, apart from the nostalgia that the game brings, but hopefully they'll surprise me when I play a demo of it in the future.

Yeah I'm sure JADO was your Favorite!?

Anywho, From all the info I've been gathering on the game, here's what out there.

-The game is being developed by Irvine California based studio DHG. It is still unclear how much involvement Rare has on the development of the game.
-Fighting game veteran and former Namco Bandai Community Manager Rich Bantegui is involved in the project. It's still unclear what his role is in the development of the game (but its a good indicator that they may look towards the community for feedback).
-Auto Double and Manual Combos are retained in the game's combo engine just like before. Manuals are more character specific now and much harder to combo break now than Auto Double extensions.
-Mad Catz has already unveiled the TE2 arcade stick for the platform. looks like a solid stick and a nice design overall.

Shame they didn't let Rare handle this (although it is the same company in name only these days).

Looks like the game is being digitally released ONLY. Oh! but that's not all! Much like the newly announced DOA and Tekken Revolution for PS3 (released today as a matter of fact), This new Killer Instinct is being releases in a "Free 2 Play" fashion. Meaning you get to play with a selective amount of modes and characters provided for free. Additional modes, characters and game content must be purchased separately. So... what to you get to play with for free? Jago. That's it!!!

I feel so bad this series. It doesn't even have a chance at this point and it's not even out yet... :(

    This REALLY sucks!
