WTF ? It's not free to play. It's not enough even for demo. Microsoft Killer Instinct 2013 - fail hard.

God forbid someone try something new. I mean, from what I've seen of the game, it doesn't look all that interesting, but they are trying a new pricing model here... If all the characters end up costing >$60, then this is a rip and is akin to Zynga's extortion fees in their games, however, if the total cost of everything is $60 or less, then it might be interesting to see how this works out. I mean, can you imagine paying full price for a game you play once and realize you don't like it? A fighting game fits this model well. If the engine is good, it can be the same for years to come, people just like new characters & tweaks here and there, which can be provided via updates.

Given Microsoft's very recent track record, though, I have no reason to believe anything but this is a money grab.

Worth noting: BlazBlue released a DLC character for $8. $8 per character for a full roster (at least 10 for a new IP, more for older series) will be expensive. $5 would be reasonable, especially if there are bulk discounts and there is some assurance this game is going to be around for a few years. DLC characters are generally allowed in tournaments, unless they are platform exclusive... Again, I don't see this game taking off, but I also don't see the big deal with this pricing model, until we actually see the prices, that is.

DOA U is trying free to play and I don't like that model. Tekken has a Free to play game on PSN starting today and you start with 8 characters most of whom are my mains so
I think I can get on board with that.

I don't understand how Microsoft can be this fucking retarded. I just... I mean, what's next? They announce Timothy Roberts as the next head of Microsoft Game Studios?

Maybe they're trying to get some quick cash off people before they realize Killer Instinct was never that great to begin with.

As the guy with the KI Avatar, I call BS on it not being a great game. KI had a fighting system like no other at the time. The combo system alone made it a great game. Couple that with cool characters, good music, stage based fatalities, great graphics (for the time) and good character balance and you have a hell of a fighting game. Something about destroying someone with a 27 hit combo in the arcade that was quite satisfying. This is just another attempt to get the public to accept this microtransaction crap as the norm. The corporate equivalent of shoving spinach down your kid's throat at dinner every night so that he'll eventually just shut up and eat it.

and here you and I find common ground, SORT OF. I don't hate KI but the Combo system was convoluted. The Bosses were WAY TOO HARD so hard they make SNK Bosses their bitch.

But I won't lie back in the day I was REALLY good in the SNES version. I never really got to play 2 or Gold much and KI2 took out thunder so there went my Main.
The redone theme of KI One is probably the best thing about this new one. The Graphic style everyone is on Roids. The animation at this point is very jerky too.

It's my hope the people who left Rare band together and make a response PS4/WII U title.

What's the difference between buying a fighting game, then buying the update a year later with more characters, all at around the same price EACH, a la Street Fighter 4, Super Street Fighter 4, Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition? If you bought all of these new, it would have set you back ~$150 across 3 years.

Compare this to buying all the characters you want for a game all at once, then deciding if you want later updates as they come out... Again, this all depends on pricing and timing, but if the price is right, what's the difference? Wouldn't you want to get extra mileage out of your favorite game buy getting a low priced update to it, rather than having to pay full price for said update? It sucks for collectors, because it's all digital, and if you are a collector, I get it, but that's a different discussion...

I've been wishing sports series would do this for years. The only thing that really changes year to year is the rosters. The game engines only get major updates every other year, if that frequently. Just let me pay for the roster updates and let me go on my merry way.

You know, back in the days, Nintendo made 3 bundles to ship their consoles with: Super Mario, Donkey Kong and Killer Instinct. I don't need to talk about how good the first two are now Killer Instinct is the best fighting game to this day. Killer Instinct 2 for the arcades is so awesome, the combo system, the way characters were designed.

While you had on one side Manga characters in Street Fighter and real people scanned on Mortal Kombat you had a real original graphic game with the same graphic engine as Donkey Kong.
When KI1 was released you didn't even had street fighter alpha 2 that started making a difference on the series. It was that shit unbalanced and slow as hell of Street Fighter II.

Mortal Kombat on the other hand had a good fighting system but it was disconnected. A hit to another had a bad connection. Now Killer Instinct you can see some amazing game play from even inexperienced people.

Bottom line, it's the master piece on the fighting games and I didn't had to talk about the music, that's great (not talking about the remix CD, which for my embarrassment I do enjoy).

One, I am a collector so that does matter to me. Two, its indicative of a horrible trend of releasing incomplete games or arbitrarily locked games that just makes the already crappy modern gaming market even crappier. Everything is not a smart phone, no matter how much companies wish to treat everything like it is. There's a reason for that model on a phone; The games are generally bland crap distributed in an over saturated market with little real promotion behind them. Getting players in the door is number one priority. For console games made by major developers this is unnecessary, especially when you have a series that had a die hard fan base in its day and people who have waited a very long time for a new version. You wanna put out a free demo? Great! I bought many games back in the day due to those PSX demo discs I'd get in the mail and from magazines. But to say here's the game, we took this, this, and this out despite the fact that it's clearly in there as you can fight all of the characters and if our servers ever cease to operate, too bad, is just nonsense.

I'm just wondering why now? Is it because they own the brand after buying Rare and are just releasing it to make some cash?

Back in the day the combo system was fairly unique and that made it fun but there's been 15+ years of developments in fighting games that make KI look rather simple. Shit, compared to SF2 back in the day it was fairly simplistic. The combos were the only thing that set it apart from all the rest.

It would be HILAROUS if the original team most of whom have left Rare from I understand banded together maybe with Neither realm and did a Response game that is the true Successor to KI, with very thinly veild look alikes. Doesn't matter PS4 WII U, VITA, 3DS I'd buy it.

Damn.... These Free to Play games are going to be gold mines for these companies. Get a free game with one character. To get a new character it will be $5.00 and for a new outfit or moves maybe even stages then add another $2.00 or more, so basically $7.00 - $10.00 bucks per character. Times that by about 30 playable characters equals to approx $300.00 dollars for a game that would of cost $60.00 - $120.00 dollars depending on region. Sad thing is that people will just let this happen as most sites are praising this strategy as you can buy the characters and stuff you want. For completists your screwed!

EDIT - I guess it's a smart move by these companies to get money and it also stops game trading as you have to pay for your characters regardless as the base game is free.

I'm sure the Ultra Vortek license isn't hard to get right now.

Wasn't there an unreleased arcade game that was a KI rip off? It wasn't Ultra Vortek but it was a fighting game

Edit- It was something called Vicious Cycle. I do have a rom for it somewhere. I'll have to give it a spin.

I don't think I can trust the company that made silent hill homecoming to work on this. But that's besides the point since I'm not getting the console anyway so...

This is upsetting to me. I do not know what they are doing/thinking in their camp, but this does not read good at all. Very saddening. :(
