Hey Karsten, if you want a better 360 "fighting" controller, I highly recommend these: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Pad-..._1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1272298542&sr=8-1 I have one and the d-pad is great. Nice six button face layout. The analogue sticks are rubbish, but you probably wouldn't need them in this case.
Look on ebay for a PS2 to Xbox 360 controller adapter cable. I bought one for 10 bucks. If you have a wired 360 controller then you should give this adapter cable a try. It requires a wired 360 controller to work but if you already have that then for 10 bucks being able to use a PS2 pad is very nice.
I'd just get a cheap arcade stick or something...I mean, the PS2 controller isn't that great for fighting games. Sure, it's better than the 360 one, but even a Jaguar pad would be better than the 360 for fighters.
For me 98 is the best (of what i've played) with 97 being my second favorite. For some reason 99 just didn't gell with me. Also i've not had the opportunity to play anything past 99. =(
Technicaly speaking, 98 and especially 99 and 2003 are the bests. However for gameplay I prefer the 2k. It feel fast with a perfect timing and a lot of cool combo. Only one thing, at high level of gameplay it has some annoying bugs.
Most SNK games have infinites so its pretty hard to avoid them. Seriously the best are 98 (99 Dream Match on Dreamcast), 99 (99 Evolution on the Dreamcast), 2002 and Garou Mark of the Wolves off top of my head.
IMO the backgrounds in 98 are very boring, well done but of no interest. 96 is where it's at, the ultimate mix of badass music & ace backgrounds.
Those who say the 360 pad is worthless for fighters, fear the Analog stick. Also KOF 2002 UM is the sweetspot.
The analog is just tight enough to do all the super motions. Granted I'd rather use my arcade sticks but can't be bothered to buy the adapters AND wired 360 pads
