A couple months ago, I picked up a Korean, Samsung copy of Sonic The Hedgehog 2. I can't find any for sale anywhere, so does anyone have an idea about how hard it is to find another? Might post a picture if I can get one of my copy. It's got the game and the original box and artwork. Not trying to sell or get prices, just how hard it is to actually find KR Genny games. Yes I did see the post under this one - Digmac
Diggy, its hard to find any korean stuff most days, i know the rom is bit for bit the american one though
I went ahead and uploaded pictures for you guys. It has the original Samsung branded box even. Sadly it could be in better shape but this is the only one I've ever seen. Diggy its supposedly super rare due to a licensing hitch with sega and samsung at the time. dude you struck gold. no way to price it.
I had absolutely no idea... Funny thing is, if you look it up, the cover art for my copy is nowhere to be found. Also, the licensed by Sega on the back is just a sticker, never printed on the cover. If anyone else can shed info on this, I'll be most appreciative.
Not to bump this guy, but just putting this out there. Seems to me, that this release has absolutely NO documentation anywhere on the internet at all. No scans, no release date, no info, anywhere. I'll be getting scans of the cover art and cart sometime soon. Might go to another, more Sonic related forum to see if I can dig up some interest and information around this game. I would like to also find out if there are any other known owners around the internet at all. Thanks guys for any info provided. Also! I tested the cart last night and can fully confirm it works. EDIT: Scan Complete - Digmac
This is possibly the rarest of the Korean Sonics. But some of the variants on the original Sonic are also quite rare. And all but Sonic 3 are next to impossible to find nowadays. And here I'm talking really only about the packaging and manual. The carts are not really that uncommon at all. I have two boxed copies and they both look like yours. (see picture) Also, here is the December 92 issue of Game Champ Magazine (p.38) http://www.gamemeca.com/magazine/view.php?mgz=gamechamp&ym=1992_12_1&p=1 This shows that the Korean release was on Nov. 21st, 1992. This means that neither Japan nor Korea participated in Sonic 2sday .
@Comboy, thanks a bunch for the helpful information. Any way to put a value on this guy? I don't think there's any record online of one ever being sold.
It's hard to say. There was one copy that was sold on ebay in early 2015 or late 2014. It was listed by a Korean seller as a pure auction and amazingly sold for only about $50 or so (if memory serves). But I think that was a case of poor selling choices and not enough people realizing just how rare it was. Especially when there is the "Asian version" Sonic 2 that is obscure but almost always cheap. It must have been disappointing for that seller. If I were to sell one of my copies, I wouldn't take less than $200. And since I only have one manual I would want to keep that one. There is also a Sonic 2 for the Gam*Boy/Aladdin Boy (Master System) that is also really obscure. I sold one of those complete with manual for $200 a couple of years back. With Korean stuff, so many people don't even realize that it exists that you sometimes get disproportionate demand and the supply is so small that there's not much data to gauge "going rate".
Also, next time I'm in Seoul I'll see if I can get you a replacement cart for you. The part that is ripped off on yours is actually green. So many of them have damage to the labels.
Probably because in general Koreans don't take care of their games. Most stuff from Korea looks like crap due to the lack of care. Even their cars are full of dents! Or at least they were in the city of Pusan / Busan (whatever they call it these days). I'm lucky enough to own a few Korean gaming items that were imported in to Japan straight away so they're still in mint condition. In fact, Xbox 360 Korean ages were a little easy to find in this part of Japan due to the main ports to Korea being here.
This entire post bothers me. I don't think it contributes to the conversation and it makes unnecessary generalizations about Korea.
Has it not been on Guardiana for a while? I've seen it for sale several times, usually in larger lots of Korean MD games, but several times by itself at least. I know of half a dozen copies, maybe more, in collections with a Korean release focus. (Plus the three in this thread alone...) Cool item for sure, rare too. But not quite the grail you're making out imo. (Apologies if I seem a little blunt...just seems there are quite a few threads like this these days where someone has an admittedly rare item, but because they can't find / don't know anything further, seem to think they are sitting on a grail and / or money pit. Like that chap who got a pippin Super Marathon and went on and on and on and on and on and on about it like it was the second coming, managing to find a way to reference he had it in every forum post of his for months....yawn....) Edit - lol...I hardly log in these days...so hardly ever see chat...I can see it now...and that chap is in there...talking about his copy of Super Marathon....couldn't make this shit up hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Edit 2 - cost him $155 apparently. Loved that disingenuous what's it worth thread after (admittedly way more than he paid, but even so, poor form imo). Man, I'm a jaded %&^%&^% these days....
@Digmac daaaaaad, I'm being bullieeeeed... The purpose of the thread was to get an actual price on it. I was well aware at the time that what I paid was beneath its value, and so was the person who sold it to me, and I therefore wanted to gauge how much it was actually worth should I decide to sell it at some point down the line. My apologies for talking about it so much, I was simply over the moon after searching for it for a very long time and finally finding it. Next time you complain about somebody, could you at least tag them in your post? Saves them the trouble of being told about it by someone else.
@wheelaa "can't find/don't know"... Before I took scans of this I'd like for you to try and find a scan of the Korean Sonic 2 artwork at all. I looked and looked and am not as naive or gullible as you make me out to be, or @DeChief. This seriously wasn't documented and I just really wanted to get it out here. If you can't respect that then you best just leave us alone, because that kind of talk isn't wanted, especially not on this forum. @Yakumo. Agreed with @Comboy
"can't find/don't know", what does that mean exactly? You can't google 'Guardiana'!?! I told you where there is some info, but you can't find it. Makes me wonder how well you were actually able to go looking at all. If I cared about Korean MD stuff (or this debate) I'd undertake a proper internet trawl and likely find more images. Auction archives alone have a wealth of pics, and there are some good, albeit obscure, Korean variant resources out there. I have no issue at all with people sharing info. It's what this site is all about to me, and why I generally still love it here 10 years in. What I take issue with is jumping to conclusions based on poor research. So please don't try to educate me on what this forum is about. I totally get that you are chuffed with a great find. I did say "Cool item for sure, rare too." I get that you feel I'm dumping on you here, but really it's your own fault for not doing proper research. @ DeChief - I suspect you well knew, or at least had a very good idea, as to the going rate, and that value thread was just another willy wave. Also, prices vary, so what it was worth then does not have much bearing on its value should you "decide to sell it at some point down the line". I didn't name check you as tbh I couldn't recall who the hell you were initially, and then when I happened to glance in chat for the first time in months, I was too busy giggling at the coincidence/irony, sorry. Toodlepip Edit - seems I had no idea about this @ username being a tag thing something I dunno/care that gives a notification. I thought it was just way to say who you were replying to, as in "this reply is directed at ...."!
Sorry you feel that way but I'm only saying what I've seen for myself. I've been to Korea many times. It's only a short trip from Fukuoka on the ferry. Anyway, a lot of the used games there are in poor condition IMO. And it's also true about the amount of cars with dents or scratches. I wasn't making something up to be mean, just stating what I've seen in Korea. If you don't agree then that's fine. I really don't mind. Just wanted to make sure you understand I wasn't bashing Korea just for the sake of it.
Well knew? Had a very good idea? Seriously? How on Earth am I supposed to know the value of something that, at the time, I had seen sold on the internet a total of twice; both times in auctions containing many other items, therefore making it impossible for me to discern its actual value myself. A price for something like Super Marathon is very unlikely to change all that much when it isn't being sold anywhere by anyone for several-year long periods. The price check thread was not a "willy wave", it was, strangely enough, a price check. You have suspected wrongly. I suggest that you don't assume things, it does nothing more than make an ass out of u and me. I have tried my hardest to be somewhat polite and significantly less blunt than I've been in the past, so the least you could do is afford me the same treatment, you insufferable British prick.
