Hi there, I don't know if there are people out there that may be able to help, but I am looking for assistance. I am trying to see if there are any capture cards out there compatible with OSX Snow Leopard that will allow me to game/capture footage from consoles to my mid 2010 iMac 21". I know I will probably get flack for being a "dirty mac user" but I really don't want to have to shell out money for a HDTV to play PS3/Xbox 360 games on, plus my CRT doesn't support 60Hz meaning my import Saturn games are at present unplayable. Any help would be much appreciated Don't ignore for Mac hate, do it for Saturn love
No such thing. There are those with less of course, but lag free simply isn't going to happen. You're at a disadvantage in that the iMac doesnt have PCI-e slots (I use OSX as well, but on a Mac Pro), so instantly the best solutions are out. You're also at a disadvantage in that it doesn't have USB3.0 slots and I dont think it has Thunderbolt, so that will take another chunk out unfortunately. Ill have to check what is still compatible with OSX at that point, I imagine there wont be as many options as you might hope if you want quality.
Yep, unfortunately, you'll need a newer device to do something like that. Frankly, though, you don't need to spend a ton of money on an HDTV. You can just buy a good monitor and for far less, especially if you only want to game. Sure, it won't be as big as a TV, but you can get one that's 21"-23" relatively cheap. If you want to then record footage, I'd suggest the Elgato Game Capture HD. There are other similar devices, too such as the one that AVermedia makes. They work over USB 2.0, so you can't play the game by looking at your computer, but it has an HDMI pass-through so you can see the game in real-time on a separate monitor or TV whilst you capture. And don't worry, not everyone hates Macs. Granted, I'd rather have two machines, but since I can't even afford to build a Windows machine right now, I've just got my MacBook Pro. I find it ironic when people complain about OS X when Windows has just as many problems (and let's be honest, if you can use both, it makes life easier, especially if you do a variety of stuff).
Yep you will. I would probably save and get a nice TV though, or dive into a PC build. Best thing to do is to make your money stretch..
Does the 2010 iMac 21" have a thunderbolt port or just a firewire 800 port? If you only have firewire, you're going to need to find a dedicated firewire capture box, but this stuff is old now and most don't have HD capability. Also, the good ones were very expensive and intended for commercial use, otherwise you'll only find SD firewire capture boxes. Here one that AJA made: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...IoHD_FireWire_800_Analog_Digital_Capture.html Here is a cheaper one with 480P input: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2727957 Is this the Mac you have? https://support.apple.com/kb/sp588?locale=en_US
Sounds like you're in the UK. For the price of a decent capture device, you could buy a small (21" isn't big, anyway) television. Just do that. Hauppauge HD PVR 2 gaming edition is £120 (and you have lag from that AND lag from whatever converter you're using for your Saturn) or a 22-24" television from Richer Sounds or John Lewis for the same price. I know what I'd do. In fact, I bought a 32" 1080P Samsung at Christmas for £269 and it's excellent.
I don't know about overseas but here, it's way cheaper to buy a (good) monitor as opposed to a (good) TV (unless you want a crappy TV thats on clearance which aren't even often name brands). You usually won't get composite and/or component jacks, though, nor coaxial or RF. So there are ups and downs, but if you're just using it for gaming, I would just go for a monitor if it's indeed cheaper for you.
